How?
This is really for UK based NZ Airpoints Members, because it means crediting NZ flights to BMI Diamond Club which shifts over to BA Executive Club (which requires 4 BA flights a year minimum to retain status regardless of other flying).
With BMI Diamond Club becoming aligned with BA, there is a window until the end of May 2012 to credit Star Alliance (non-LH group) flights to Diamond Club to obtain status. After that only BMI and BA will credit to the account (and the intention is to shift everyone over to BA Executive Club).
A return C class ticket LHR-AKL will clearly get you BMI Diamond Club Silver status. However, BA has announced that BMI Diamond Club Silver status holders will be eligible for BA Executive Club Silver Status - which is in fact Sapphire status with OneWorld (equal to Qantas Gold). BMI Gold status holders will be eligible for BA Gold Status, equal to OneWorld Emerald (Qantas Platinum). In fact only another 12,000 miles on top of NZ C Class LHR-AKL return would get you there.
In short, you will have a year of OneWorld group access to business class checkin, lounges for only earning what is equal to Star Alliance Silver status.
At the moment, such flights (LHR-SYD-AKL) on QF in C Class crediting to QF FF would not gain you that status on its own (assuming you don't have any status already), neither would crediting it to BA Executive Club.
It's a rather easy way for UK/Europe based Airpoints account holders, fed up with the recent changes, who are about to embark on long haul C Class flights, to quickly obtain OneWorld status on Star Alliance (non LH group) flights.
