Travel Photography - What was this gear?

I saw a woman with what looked to be an ordinary zoom lens with something on the end--it was substantially wider than the lens itself but not very thick. She was taking pictures *VERY* close up.
We had no language in common, I couldn't ask her about it.
My understanding is that teleconverters go between the body and the lens, this was something on the end of the lens instead.

Probably a close-up filter. If it was a lot wider than the lens, it was likely on a step-up adapter ring.

I have one of these (http://www.amazon.com/Canon-500D-77mm-Close-Lens/dp/B00009XVDB) from Canon somewhere around here, though I haven't used it in years since getting a true macro lens.
It screws into the end of the lens like a filter but, as noted, is sized for the largest threads and could have been mounted on a smaller lens using a step-up ring.
It could also just be a macro lens that looked like that, as with this older Canon FD macro

My only other thought is a macro flash, but all of the wiring makes that a bit more recognizable.

Lee, Cokin, or other system filter holder?

None of the items pictured are remotely right. The close-up lens that's linked but not pictured is within the realm of possibiliy. It doesn't look exactly right but that could simply be a matter of brand.

A little more info, a sketch, something, couldn't hurt...
It could I suppose have been and extremely wide angle lens, perhaps one with its hood on,

perhaps a perspective control lens of some type.

My vote is for a lens hood.

i vote either zoom teleconverter, macro (since you op says close up), or possibly a wide angle adaptor.

I have no way of posting a sketch--I'm using internet cafe's, not my system.

Now we're getting somewhere! It's not the same but it's most likely a relative of that. That's the sort of disc on the end that I saw.

No. This most certainly didn't function as one.

Perhaps it was a Lensbaby or something of that ilk, if she was really close...

I don't think so. The perspective control lens pictured below looks to be within the variations on a theme one would expect.

Lens mount converter looks like what you're talking about but that would go on the opposite side of the lens. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/739553-REG/Canon_0084T213_LCV_20E_Lens_Mount_Converter.html
