We can get get a cheaper flight if we fly into Dusseldorf international airport instead of Frankfurt international. You can take the train from frankfurt airport to Landstuhl. Can you take the train from Dusseldorf to Landstuhl?? If so how do you do it. I tried and I did not understand it.

You can do it.
Use this link: http://www.bahn.de/i/view/DEU/en/index.shtml
From: Düsseldorf Flughafen
To: Landstuhl
Depending on what time you leave, there are 2-4 connections to get there though.

Note that if you arrive on Lufthansa you can purchase a 29€ add on that lets you travel anywhere in Germany, far cheaper than the 59/94€ options shown above.

In the screenshot above, I just picked a random date this week.
Depending on his actual travel dates, he might be able to pick up a Sparpreis with an ICE for around 35€.

Try looking for Kaiserslautern HBF. It is a much larger station and is only 10-15 minutes from Ramstein. In fact if you find a ticket to Landstuhl you will either pass through Kaiserslautern or have to change trains there to pick up the local.
