Washington D.C. (including Baltimore) - hotel advice for senior

I will be taking my mother to DC for a weekend later in the year (Fri-Mon). She will be 76 then, and although reasonable mobile, can't walk long distances (except when shopping it seems!).
Would appreciate any advice on a suitable hotel near to the main attractions and/or close to the metro. Don't know if $150 a night is a reasonable target, although I guess the fact it will be a weekend should help.

I think that $150/night for a hotel in downtown DC is wishful thinking. That price range can occasionally be found in suburban areas, but that makes it rough with your mother.
I generally recomend the River Inn in Foggy Bottom. 2 blocks to Foggy Bottom Metro and short walk into Georgetown. Tons of decently-priced restaurants within 3 blocks. A sample booking for a random weekend in June runs $225-275/night.

thanks- I thought it might be a bit low. We can probably go up to $225 at a stretch if we need to.

Consider the Doubletree or Hampton Inn in Silver Spring. Both are a short walk to the metro, which is red line. I just booked a weekday stay at the former for $188/night.

How about the Hilton in Ballston which is literally on top of the Ballston Metro?

The Dupont Circle Hotel is about $220 a night in June on the weekend.
Very short walk from metro and right in the center of restaurants and close to museums and other attractions. If not walking, then short taxi rides.

Hotel Tabard Inn is in your price range and right in Dupont Circle. Much more charming than other hotels with a very nice restaurant and not far from the Metro. Only issue might be a flight of stairs to your room.
Here are some of the rooms: http://www.tabardinn.com/rooms/tour/private_bath
