Cruises - Small fire on Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship, no one hurt

A small fire aboard the Allure of the Seas cruise ship has been extinguished with no reported injuries.

Royal Caribbean International spokeswoman Cynthia Martinez says the engine fire occurred Friday at about 7:45 p.m.

Just trying to celebrate my nana's 104th birthday. No need for extinguishers!

Ironically, one of my colleagues and his partner were on this cruise when this happened last week.

He said the crew were very calm and handled everything in short order.

Hi-Fog (http://www.marioff.com/) is a twist on a conventional water sprinkler system. Essentially it uses high pressure to deliver a water spray with small drop size... which suppresses the fire without causing excessive flood damage.

Pretty much all cruise ships built after 2000, and some even earlier are fitted with Hi-Fog systems. It's a pressurised fire prevention system and looks like a sprinkler head, but when discharged uses considerably less water and creates a fine mist covering the room. It extinguishes very quickly, and leave almost no damage. I once mistakenly activated a head over the top of an open engine whilst testing the system, the engine was part way through a major overhaul, and thankfully there was absolutely no contamination, if it had been a sprinkler system it would have been a very expensive mistake.

One of the other main benefts of this system is that because it uses less water it is less likely to have a negative impact on the stability of the vessel.


As for fires on ship's, most large cruise ships have one or two small fires a year onboard which are detected and responded to very quickly with a properly trained crew.
