Hertz - Better to reserve in advance? Or upgrade at the counter...

Hello! New to FT :) and looking for a little advice...
I'm renting a car 1-way for 10 days from SFO to LAX picking up early in the morning Friday 1st June...
I am trying to decide a) whether to rent from Hertz or National (I've got #1 gold status at hertz but only because of their free promotion) and b) whether to book a nicer car online (premium) or book a standard/fullsize and try to upgrade at the counter.
I was going to book a Premium...but having read various comments on here (and from prior experience) would REALLY like to avoid a Crown Vic/Grand Marquis.
Any advice gratefully received! :p

A one-way rental complicates things a bit. Still I'd reserve the Full Size and find a one-class upgrade coupon.
I would guess that your chances of a Grand Marquis would be lower at National.

I would book both a premium and full size then see what you get for premium.

Will the location be annoyed if you have multiple reservations but only keep one? Am thinking about doing the same for an out-of-state one-way I'm planning for this summer...renting from a hotel location, so limited selection on vehicles. Have made full-size, premium, and luxury reservations and was planning on keeping all three and choosing the best, but dunno if that will really tick them off.

Maybe, they are people after all anything is possible if they are having bad day. IF I am doing multi res I usually put backup rental in different name (someone I am with) or I stagger the times out far enough so they aren't considered duplicates. Large locations pull gold res every hour and usually pull a four hour window. So if you book a 10am res and a 10 pm res they should not see the second res. You have to be careful because the pickup time on res changes the rates (e.g. after 12pm on Thursday is considered weekend if you bring it back by Monday.) HLE's and small locations are different and usually pull all gold res and will notice two reservations. Just explain why you did it and they may be sympathetic and they cant downgrade you lowest rental class anyway.

You shouldn't be cross-posting - it's against FT rules. You put this exact same question in National.
