Interested in a golf trip through Scotland. Arriving in Edinburgh (9/1)for 7 days at St. Andrews and then want to go onto 3-4 other golf locations for an additional 7 days. Need transportation and arrangements. Able to drive but would consider other transportation for the two of us.

Can I suggest you avail yourself of the services of the one of the multiple operators/agencies that put together golf packages like this. They arrange tee times and schedules, can book hotels etc. Folks on here are happy to give you advice if you have a suggested itinerary, but they aren't travel agents.
Really all depends on your budget and what type of golf courses you want to play. I would suggest the Turnberry area for a few days......lots of links courses in that area to choose from although not all are open to the public.
As UAPremExecflyer said booking a package through an agent is a good idea. Scotia travel (http://www.scotiatravel.com/golf) are a reputable company and sell golf packages.

a tour might be a good idea, as I understand that arranging guaranteed tee times can be a non-trivial matter.

Golfers wishing to book a tee time in advance on the Old Course should download an application form from this website and apply at 10am BST on the first Wednesday in September for a tee time the following year

At St Andrews there is also the daily draw.

And make sure you have a valid golf handicap card for the starter. Also when I played last year going playing after 2pm is better. A nice tip (£25) can help your chances at the Old Course, but you did not hear that from me
