Thailand - Options for overnight near BKK (not transiting)

As part of an upcoming trip, I need to spend a night near BKK before a 9am flight out to DPS. We are coming in from Elephantstay in Ayutthaya and won't leave there until approximately 5pm. Figure about 1 hr drive which puts us in the vicinity of the airport at 6pm. It looks like the absolutely most convenient is the Novotel, but it is pricey for Bangkok hotels (although I can get it down to $109 prepaid)
We will have already spent 6 nights in Bangkok prior to heading to Elephantstay, so won't be missing the city by not staying there before the flight.
We generally like nice hotels, but after having spent a few nights at an elephant camp, I think our expectations will be severely lowered :D
I am seeing some other options on Expedia, but have no information on them. Free airport transport is a plus, as is free Internet access. Since we are going to be getting in around dinner time, having food options around is also a big plus (it seems like some of the hotels are nowhere near anything)
Anyone have opinions on something other than the Novotel?

Since it is only one night and you are now experienced at staying at cheaper places - Sanawan Palace is near the airport.
Various priced rooms. Free WiFi. Pool.

Is not a bad place for an overnight near the airport. Many other options with Agoda too.

Or take the Airport train into the city and a taxi back in the morning

That is a very good place to look.

That would be my suggestion regardless of how many days you've already spent in Bangkok.

I've been starting to think the same thing. Maybe burn some Hyatt points at the Grand Hyatt there. With a downturn in business travel, I really need the nights to requal and free nights don't help unfortunately. But if I was going to stay at a non-chain at the airport anyways...it's a wash.
What am I looking at in terms of traffic (and thus, required departure time from a city hotel) to make a 9am flight in J on TG on a Thursday?
Oh, and BTW, I am booking a rt transfer to/from Elephantstay, so it can take me directly to the hotel, and then I just need a taxi to get back to the airport in the morning.
And last one - why not the airport train in the morning? I would seem that it would be immune to traffic and thus more reliable. Does it not run that early in the morning?

Traffic isn't too bad going toward the airport in the morning, but it will take a bit longer to get to the highway.
The airport train runs from 6AM til midnight.

I was driving down King Kaew Road a few weeks ago, which is just west of the airport and noticed a Best Western which looked interesting? http://www.amaranthhotel.com/
There is a huge restaurant on the same road, closer to Lat Krabang Road, called Koh Lanta Suvarnabhumi, which you can see off to the right if landing to the south. I haven't been but did see it featured on a local TV show here, great for plane spotting.

There are hotels not far from the Rail Link stations in the Pratunam area. You can walk to hotels from the Ratchaprorop Rail Link station if you want. Rail service back to the airport starts in the morning at 0600 or use a meter taxi.
Two hotels not that far from the Rail Link are Baiyoke Boutique Hotel and the Baiyoke Sky Hotels. Baiyoke is closest to the rail link.

There are even a few hotels near the Phaya Thai Rail Link station too. Florida Hotel is probably the nearest one.
