Asiana Club - Checked bags through ICN with 17 hour layover

Hi

I have a flight coming up on OZ, SYD-LHR in C, with a 17 hour (overnight) layover in ICN. Will there be an issue with me getting my bags checked right through to LHR, given the length of the layover?

Tangential to that, would you suggest staying at an airport hotel or travelling into Seoul and staying somewhere there? Not having heavy bags will obviously make getting in/out of the city much easier.

Any thoughts appreciated

Cheers

I don't see any problems with your bags going through to London. As mentioned on another thread, you qualify for the free hotel room from OZ (call immediately to reserve, it's not automatic). With 17 hours, I would prefer to be in Seoul rather than Incheon.

There is also a transit hotel right in the airport, but from experience, I would never stay there again. I didn't care for the closed-in feeling of a windowless room, and the free rooms provided by OZ are much nicer. The closest hotel that they use is just a short 10 min ride away in Incheon Airport City (they also have a hotel in Seoul). Transportation to the hotel is included as well as a meal.

You do have other options in the form of transit tours (Incheon, Seoul, DMZ) as well as a Korean Spa right in the airport (this spa has sleeping facilities as well). ICN Airport has an excellent English website with detailed maps of each floor of the terminal. The 4th floor has internet terminals, TV lounge, showers, the in-airport transit hotel and both the KE and OZ lounges.

Thanks Daawgon. I was not aware of the free hotel room, I'll give them a call tomorrow. Are there any choices wrt to hotel that I should be aware of? If I arrive at 7pm and leave at 1150am the next day would I have time in the morning to go to the DMZ (from my quick search it appears most are at least half day tours)? I have visited from the DPRK side but not from the ROK.

Cheers

ETA: I found the other thread, so I'll post any questions about the hotels in there. :)

The free hotel room doesn't apply if on redemption tickets though. The Hyatt Regency at the airport is OK but a shuttle ride away.

I have checked bags from SYD to LHR without any issues and priority tags worked a treat too. If you haven't seen Seoul then it may be worthwhile heading down town. Check out which hotels are served by which limo busses. You'll only really have late evening and a few hours in the morning, so staying at the airport may be the best option.

Thanks VC10 Boy, I'm not on an award ticket.

I'm leaning toward the Airport Town hotel (the June?). I'm just thinking once I get out and into town it might not be worth it for what is basically going to be dinner, bed, breakfast and back to the airport.

A bit confused over timing. Doesn't LHR leave about 14:00?

I hadn't realised Monday was so different to other days!

I actually chose Monday because of the time. The 2pm flight leaves not enough time to do much of anything before the flight. With a 12pm flight, I can get up, hit the hotel gym, have breakfast and get to the airport around 10. How's the OZ lounge, worth a visit?

Follow up question, sorry.

Spoke to OZ, turns out the hotels aren't provided if you're on a one way ticket, which I am (I'm driving back:cool:). So that being the case, does anyone have any recommendations for a hotel around Incheon? Preferably with shuttle service. I'm not too fussed about the hotel as long as it's clean and maybe with a gym for a quick workout.

Thanks again.

Looks good, thanks ethelman. I'm sure I'll survive without a workout, I just like having one before a long flight.

You're driving from London to Sydney? I know people used to do this, but some of the intervening countries are scarier now than they used to be too.
