Qatar Airways Privilege Club - EU261 claim/ Compensation for QR flight

Hello, I wanted to ask if anyone has experience with compensation from Qatar airways after long flight delay via the EU261/2004 regulation?

I was booked on Economy Hong Kong to Brussels via Doha (return leg of my trip). Because of one of QR's plane being diverted to guangzhou due to extreme HKG airport weather, we were waiting at hong kong airport for 8+ hours. Originally scheduled to depart 18:50, we ended up taking off 3:20am (a meal voucher was provided by QR)

Also after we took off, we had to make a landing in Bangladesh before finally arriving to Doha, for "operational reasons".

This whole delay resulted to me missing my connection from Doha to Brussels, and being booked on the same flight 24 hrs later. so first I had 8+ hours delay at the airport, and now another 24 hrs delay in Doha.

Even though Qatar provided hotel/meal voucher for my stay in Doha, I was wondering if I can get compensation in cash as per the EU 261/2004 regulation, since my flight originated in Brussels. The reason is that I had to be in Brussels today to attend a meeting and I won't be able to reschedule.

Am I reading the rules right and do i have a claim?

Any ideas would be appreciated, thank you

Was this yesterday/ today (18th) by any chance?

I checked in for the 1:45am flight from HKG to DOH and we boarded even though people checked in for the flight before had not taken off... On my flight it was only at around 90% load (that is what the check in staff informed me).

I have not looked into the details for the EU guidelines, but i thought it was for only flights starting in the EU...

Yes, unfortunataly it looks like theese rules are only valid for flights departing EU, or on a flight into EU if the carrier is based in EU. This subject is also discussed in another thread here at QR just a few posts ago.

ok got it -- so even though I bought the ticket in EU and the flight was into EU, I may not have a claim because QR is not based in EU.
Thank you..

But stil I would go for it and argue the best you can. For me it looks like QR didn't do their best to solve your case. Far from it. And at the end QR will have to understand that even they will have to take good care of their economy customers. As for now QR is acting like any LCC when problems occurs.

In regard to EU 261/2004 I would assume that weather related delays are 'extraordinary circumstances'.

Yes, but the transit time in DOH on HKG-BRU is normaly 10hours. So with 8hours delay out if HKG the original flight DOH-BRU should be ok. Thus in this case he might argue that it was the stop in DAC for op reasons that causes the final delay in DOH.

But knowing QR, this will be a tough case....
