Do historical aircraft interest you? Would you like a chance to ride in one? How about the oldest surviving plane flown for American (http://www.goldenwingsmuseum.com/collection/AC-Pages/Stinson-Trimotor-B.htm)? Give to the Jason Dahl fund and get a chance for you and a friend to ride in the oldest surviving plane flown by American Airlines, a Stinson Tri-Motor. The ride will be donated by Greg Herrick in whose private collection (http://www.goldenwingsmuseum.com/collection/collection.htm) the plane resides. Think about doing your mileage runs and accumulating your elite status flying this plane (http://www.goldenwingsmuseum.com/collection/AC-Images/3-Trimotors.jpg).

The winner and his or her guest will choose a June or July date mutually agreeable with Greg Herrick. They make their own way to the Anoka CountyAirport, roughly 30 miles south of Minneapolis/St Paul. There, they will take a ride in the Stinson Tri-Motor and be given a private tour of the Golden Wing Museum. The museum houses close to 30 unique and one-of-a-kind aircraft from America's Golden Age of Aviation (1920's-1930's). Anyone who donates to the fund will have the opportunity to tour the museum at the same time and to watch the ride.

Increase your chances by donating generously. Chances will be

$25 each
4 for $50
10 for $100
40 for $200
Contribute at the Dahl Fund contribution page (http://dahlfund.org/?page_id=10) and use Paypal. Please note your FT handle when you give. We have a goal of raising more than $3000. Remember, many companies will match charitable gifts. Captain Denny will keep us informed on the amount of donations. The money goes to the Capt Jason Dahl Scholarship. dahlfund.org. Capt Dahl was at the controls of Flight 93 on Sept 11th when his life was tragically taken by terrorists. It gives financial assistance to young men and women interested in an aviation career to honor Captain Dahl’s memory.

The drawing will be held on May 12 at Capt Tom Bush’ nature store in Littleton, Colorado, during the Birding Festival. He has raised funds for the Dahl Foundation (http://dahlfund.org/?p=782) since 2005.

Note: If the Ford Tri-Motor flown by both Amelia Earhart and Charles Lindbergh has passed FAA certification of its seat belts for its authentic wicker seats it can be substituted if the winner prefers.

I am on this like a... uh, no, not good comparison, but I am seriously on this, probably early next month after a tasking April paying off my greedy and notoriously hungry uncle ;).

This is a wonderful way to remember and honor Capt. Dahl.IMO every dollar to the Dahl Fund is also a way of expressing a strong "non illegitimi carborundum" ;) to those who would affect our way of life and to support the Dahl Fund in helping deserving pilots-to-be achieve their goals following in Capt. Dahl's footsteps.

I've only been flying AA ~65 years, so I never flew in the Stinson - my initial AA flights were on DC-3s - but folks here are going to have to work hard to contribute to beat me for a chance to fly in this historical aircraft. I have flown in an ex-AA Ford Trimotor and I want this! :D

Sunday is winding down and we have $300 in donations to the Capt Jason Dahl Scholarship. My whole purpose in doing this is to keep Capt Dahl's memory alive not just among the United community but throughout the aviation industry. This fund raiser is extending beyond the United Flyer Talkers because the aircraft is a vintage American Airlines aircraft and the ride will be given near MSP in Delta's territory. If you have friends with either American or Delta tell them about Capt Dahl and ask for their support.

OK, the heck with Uncle Sam, I've made a donation (I will be out of the USA through May 23 and I do NOT want to miss this opportunity!)

Fellow members, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for you, and a chance to contribute to the opportunity for a young person wanting to embark on a pilot career. For me I'd add the Stinson to my Ford Trimotor (in AA color scheme) and a de Havilland DH-89 "Rapide" experiences.

Hint: Trimotors are excellent environments to wear your NR headsets or noise-blocking earbuds! (Unless you're up front wearing a Bose headset.) This ain't your newfangled pressurized, nicely lined and plush-seated aluminum flyin' sewerpipe. :D

:D Ah, so 2 people get the ride. Very nice!!! I'll sneak my donation in on May 11, if that's not too late. :)

That said, if the total, when I make my donation, doesn't end in a 00, and that can be posted here that morning, I'll make it end in a 00. :)

Thank you all for your generous donations. As of this afternoon we are at $2225. Very impressive. I thought I would share with you a sample of one of the scholarship essays we have been receiving over the last month. We announce the winners May 12th.

In May 2010 I had my first chance to fly in a small private plane. This day would change my life forever. My friend’s dad had a Piper Comanche and he knew that I wanted to be a commercial pilot. He offered to take me flying one Sunday morning. I couldn’t Wait. He picked me up at the 2Gl right behind my house. We took off and flew around the lake, did a touch and go, and over my house. I was in love at that moment. We were heading south towards Geauga County Airport to do a landing there.

After We departed from Geauga We Were on our Way back to 2Gl when a bald eagle Went through the right wind screen and grazed my face. We were around 3000 feet descending at about l50KIAS. The bird bounced off the prop and cowling and went right through the glass. After the brief moment of unconsciousness I remember the cold and the wind were the Worst part. There were papers flying everywhere, our headsets were gone, and I
looked at the pilot and asked if we were going to be ok. He said yes. We landed at Geauga about 5 minutes after the collision. As soon as We landed it was emotional. I asked him if that happens a lot. He said,” Are you kidding me?” I walked away with a few minor cuts on my face.

Even after that extreme event I still had a love for flying. I wanted more than ever to go back up, and I knew that flying would be a part of me forever. I knew that it was just the beginning to achieving my goal as to becoming an airline pilot. I earned my private pilots license from Kent State just about a year after that. I just received my Instrument rating in December 2011. I am about flights away from my commercial license now. I still have to complete my Multi Engine license and Flight instructor License. To this day the fire inside to fIy is still there when it was the first day I saw the gound get left behind 2 years ago.

Every night I go to bed and every morning I Wake up I am thinking about flying. I live, eat, sleep and Íly airplanes. I work at the Kent State Airport part time and I also worked for an airline over the summer. If you were to ask any of the instructors out at the airport if I were dedicated they would absolutely say yes. I am there every single day of the Week trying to further my skills so I can be a better person and pilot. I also am part ofthe Kent State Flight Team. We meet three times per Week. I do not think that you
will find a more dedicated and passionate student at Kent State about their career. The hardest thing about ñying is the cost. When I told my parents that I wanted to get a piIot’s degree they said it would cost too much. I was heart broken. I found a way to get enough loans and Worked a lot to make ends meet.

Amelia Earhart once said, “You haven’t seen a tree until you have seen its
shadow from the sky.” This quote really does make good sense because the world We know on the ground is very different from the world above it. Seeing the ground from above will change how you think on the ground forever. Being in the air makes you feel that the World below is so small and reminds you not to take anything for granted. One of my favorite parts about flying is that you can go up with several things on your mind that may be bothering you but they will all go away once you start the engine. It won’t
just be a job for me, it will be my passion. I couldn’t imagine doing anything else for a career, and I know that Captain Dahl eouldn’t either. I strongly feel that he and I share the same love and passion.

Clarification: I made it very clear that my contribution was conditional upon my NOT being required to fly in AA's oldest surviving airplane should I win.

Needless, perhaps to say, that if the Ford Tri-Motor flown by Amelia Earhart is substituted I still am not going up in the air on the thing. Not, at least, until Ms Earhart is found and discovered to be alive and well and living in Tahiti.

Now that Capt Denny has confirmed that the winner can give the flight away, I am not only more relaxed but trying to think of who on Omni/PR I disagree with so much that I want him to take my place. :D

Is it possible to automatically buy a flight? I'm not the lucky sort, but if it were possible to buy a seat, depending on price, I might be willing to make a more significant contribution.

When the American Airlines Tri-Motor was found an offer was made to pay for an hours ride. The owner could not accept any compensation because of insurance. And since there is not enough demand for rides to make it worth while and to cover his libality he did not accept our offer but made one of his own. He donated the ride for the Flyer Talk raffle.

At a much younger age when I was trying to accumulate flight time I would hang out at a small airport and help anyone flying in with their tie downs, transportation to a diner, wash their plane etc.....I eventually received rides in numerous aircraft and was able to log the time. My seat mile cost was $0.00 and my time involved was worth escaping the bonds of earth. We called this being an airport bum!

All participants in this fund raiser are invited to attend the flight and you will personally meet the owner of the Golden Wings Museum. After the flight he will give a personal tour of his vintage aircraft collection. I suggest you google Greg Herrick and volunteer for one of his events and who knows what might happen.

Another choice is to purchase a chance at $25. The more chances you take the price drops to as low as $5. For example for $200 you get 40 chances. $500 you get 100.

If the winner takes their ride on June 2nd the airport which the museum is located is having an "Aviation Days". Aircraft fly-in, pancake breakfast, fun activities and a swing dance in the Golden Wings Museum in the evening. Check out the events link on their web site for photos and videos from last years event. This would be a great place to have a "DO"

SomeGuy.....As of today we are at $2975 and our goal is $3000 and we still have 10 days remaining so it looks like our goal will be exceeded. Thank you all!!! On another note only 503 chances were purchased so your odds are pretty good. 1 in 500 odds on a Tri-Motor ride is better than getting upgraded.

SomeGuy,

Greg Herrick, the owner of the golden Wings Museum and I just discussed your offer to buy a ride and he declined because of insurance. He was quite impressed that we are at $4225 that he offered to add a THIRD rider if we reach $6000 and a FOURTH rider if we go over $10,000. He did stipulate that the ride will be given to all four at the same time and June 2nd would work the best for him.

The young people who win these scholarships remind me of when I lived a lifetime ago.
Regardless of donations and such each and everyone of you make my day everyday. Sure I hope we make the goal. Regardless I ask for pictures and video so that we can post people having a great time at a once in a lifetime experience.

I'm MSP based, and figured I better chip in as well, so I just did so!

My dad is a retired US Navy Captain, who flew AD-6 Skyraiders off the USS Hornet, and was later commander of an S2F squadron based out of Glenview NAS. He got involved as a volunteer pilot at Planes of Fame air museum in Flying Cloud, MN before it all moved to CA, and flew pretty much everything there from their Hellcat and Bearcat to (his favorite) the Corsair.

I'm scheduled to work on June 2nd, but I might try and get him to the event if possible?

When you next see your dad thank him for his serrvice. His courage, sacrifice and devotion enable the rest of us to enjoy the freedoms and liberties of this great country. I am also a retired Naval Aviator and flew the S-2 like your dad. Our next raffle is in Sept and it will be a T-6 Texan.

On the morning of the 9th our totals are $5330 with 37 donors buying 903 chances.

Dave, contribution complete, and always happy to put in my share. I know you were Jason's very close friend, and I knew him from when we both were working as instructors at Flying Country Club in San Jose, though I didn't know him as well as you did.

We know each other in passing, by the way, but I'm staying under the radar here. I'm a DEN based 757/767 Cap, and was playing the drums in the swing band at the Jason Dahl fundraiser event in the hangar out in Parker a couple years ago.

Be well

The Sky is Limitless: My Desire to be a Professional Pilot

When I was a child, my grandmother and I went on a walk and ran into one of her good friends. Her friend gave me a homemade airplane made out of Popsicle sticks. This unexpected gift really enhanced my desire to be a pilot someday. As I grew up, my family began to notice my passion for airplanes. I would spend hours reading books and watching movies about these magnificent machines. My room slowly filled up with Space Shuttles and model airplanes.

Whenever I heard an airplane pass by my family and house, I would run outside and watch it soar along the sky. My childhood was spent admiring the beauty of flight, but it was not until I graduated from high school that i found my "true calling” into aviation. Upon completing high school, I attended a private college in town with a full-ride scholarship for singing; I mostly sang opera and with a special ensemble. I felt that my life was not complete. I felt as though something was missing. Near the end of my first semester in
college, I went on an introductory flight at a local flight training facility. Never had I thought that actually flying in an airplane, not dreaming of it, would be so uplifting and life changing.

During the flight, the flight instructor let me roll the piane into a turn and pitch it up and down. I felt as though I was in a dream. At the completion of the flight, I wanted my life to be involved with flying airplanes. Upon completing my first semester at the private college, I ended up transferring to Kansas State University at Salina in pursuit of a professional pilot degree; l
substituted my full-ride scholarship with many loans. I knew I would be in debt, but how else could I have started my dream? My dream of flying is so important to me and I cannot afford to allow the burden of loans to discourage that.

Since starting the professional pilot program with K-State University at Salina, in the Spring of 2011, l have progressed tremendously through my studies. ln one year, I have been able to obtain my Private Pilot license and Instrument Rating. Also, l was able to finish my Instrument Flight Lab 2 for time building. My biggest highlight last year was my solo cross-country flight to Rapid City, South Dakota. l never could have dreamed that l would have
reached this point in my life. Whenever I crank the piston engine in a Cessna Skyhawk, I feel my blood start to fill with excitement. Many times, before a flight, I become overwhelmed with excitement and that excitement bubbles throughout my communication with my instructor and Air Traffic Control; having fun and being professional is what aviation is all about. I feel home
when I am in an airplane, as though the airplane was an extension of my body. This bond is unbreakable. Every day I wake up and tell myself that I am living the dream, the dream of flying.

To me, the career of a professionai pilot is so rewarding and beneficial. When I become a professional pilot, I will be given the opportunity to travel around the country, if not the joy and adventure. Without flying, my life would not be complete; it is as if flying is a part of my DNA. I cannot imagine pursuing any other career. When I obtain my professional pilot degree, I plan to start my professional pilot career by instructing other pilot students. I want my admiration of flight to fuel the dreams of my Students and inspire them to reach their goals within aviation. When I obtain enough flight hours, I want to apply for either a regional airline or corporate job. With a regional airline, I
could gain valuable multi-engine hours that would be applied toward a major airline, later on down the road. On the other hand, a corporate job would allow me to fly to a vast variety of airports around the country, gaining valuable experience in a multitude of conditions. I would be happy with either position. One aspect of flying that I have recently become intrigued by is aerobatic flying. I have thought of this as an option because of certain training I have done with my current flight instructor. I find this aspect of flying truly breathtaking and exhilarating. Understanding the bond of an aerobatic pilot and his airplane is something that intrigues me. As of now, these are all my options; I am sure many more will be revealed as l further my
education toward becoming a professional pilot.

I have many goals when it comes to my pursuit of a degree as a professional pilot. The main goal I have, right now, is to obtain my Commercial license by the end of May. From then on, my most important goal would be to obtain my Certified Flight Instructor License by the end of the year. l am so close to reaching these milestones in my career as a professional pilot; milestones I never thought I would be so close to, since starting my degree a year ago.

Pursuing a career as a professional pilot is my dream and desire for the rest of my life. I will continue to make this dream a reality until the day I die. Every day in this profession carries endless possibilities; the sky is always limitless.

When I was 6 and Jason Dahl was maybe 6 years old.

We wanted to fly airplanes. We had a dream that was so far from any possibilty.
Our parents and others such as people like yourselves actually made our dreams come true. We did the work yes...but the inspiration and support was from folks like yourselves.

Maybe you are not just involved in the future of aviation but also directly involved in making dreams come true?

Captain Dave called Captain Denny who called me to say that some generous person just gave the $345 needed to meet our $6K goal. Thank you to the person who generously gave; thank you to all who gave so generously earlier. Every donation, small and great, is deeply appreciated by those who are on the Dahl board. And it's certainly appreciated by future pilots who get a scholarship toward their education.

This means that another FTer gets that ride on AA's oldest airworthy plane.

Well done!

Names will be drawn tomorrow. Captain Denny will announce the ride winners once drawn (and FT handle figured out).

I just threw my chances into the pot. I'm a little bummed that

A) I didn't get to be the one that broke the $6K mark

and

B) I only had $99.74 in my PayPal account so I could only buy 4 chances. Stupid eBay buying.

Seriously though, I'm quite happy to part of a great event. I'll wish good luck to two of my fellow entrants, since now we will have a total of 3 winners drawn :D

First place winner who can bring a guest is Ace Airspeed. Sceond place winner by reaching the $6000 mark is DLroads. I will be in contact with you to answer any questions.

The owner of the aircraft, Greg Herrick, would appreciate if he could give the ride on June 2nd in coordination with the airports "Aviation Days" event. The civilian flying communities have "DO's" called FLY-IN's. The airport announces they are having a FLY-IN and everyone flys their small aircraft in for a pancake breakfast. That will start the day off and they have a weekend schedule of fun activities. Check out the events calendar on the Golden Wings Museum web site for more details.

If Ace Airspeed and DLroads agree to do the ride on the second come on out and wish them well. All those who show up will get a private tour of The Golden Wings Museum after the flight. Maybe you can help the Dahl Scholarship Team choose the aircraft for next years scholarship drive.

In the evening of June 2nd Greg is having a Swing Dance in his hangar among his 34 vintage aircraft. This would be a great event for a "DO" if someone in the MSP area would like to organize it.

For anyone who may be in Denver, we had some seats open (extremely last minute) for the Dahl Fund dinner TONIGHT at 7:30 PM. At this evening's dinner, the Dahl Scholarship Fund will award the 2012-2013 scholarship winners. $18,000 in aviation scholarships will be awarded to students from 10 separate schools nation-wide. As it is so last minute, these tickets are available at cost ($40). If you want more information, please start a conversation with both myself and MSY-MSP.
Thanks!

Here were the levels to add winners:

First handle drawn gets 2 seats on plane
Second handle drawn (if $6K raised) gets 1 seat on plane
Third handle drawn (if $10K raised) gets 1 seat on plane

We didn't reach 10K so no third winner.

Hey Talkers,

I owe you big time. Congrats to the winners...I'm jealous .
We had a great award dinner and at least one of our students

We had a charity event in Littleton on Saturday. It is hosted by Capt Tom Bush. I bring this up to let you know we will most likely do it next year and we would love to meet you all. Check out dahlfund.org for updates.

Highlight of the day... some poor fellow parked in our makeshift helopad.
Two of our board members(names withheld) and the fire department actually lifted the car and moved it!

I am very happy to join AceAirspeed for a ride on the dAArk side. I have asked a flyertalk VIP to join the ride, and hopefully if all schedules clear, the FT VIP will be there as well.

UPDATE: I am pleased to announce that W0X0F_2p2 has accepted my request to join the ride and also write on the experience. While my summary of the experience would be "amazing' and "wow", I make a fair assumption that W0X0F_2p2's summary would share many more details and allow us all to feel as if we were there, inside the plane. It's also a way of saying thank you for taking so much time to answer so many aviation questions from the flyertalk community (and from 2p2)

I called today and fell on a DL CS rep. who is also (especially his son) flying 'junkie'. Heard the reason, and happily agreed to waive fee changes for my trip (though no discounts). So, I had to some extra $$$, but instead of flying LGA-MSY, I will fly, LGA-MSP-MSY-LGA, being UP2 for seg#1, and cleared UP2 for seg#2 (short, but still), so I can go ahead and get a semi-relaxed flight on the way to fly the oldest dAArk side plane

Dear Capt. Denny, Dear Greg and Dear Golden Wings employees, technitians and volunteers,

I would like to thank you (THANK YOU!) for a wonderful visit and for your support of the Dahl fund. This was an incredible experience. I am sitting now at the MSP lounge, and I am so excited I had the opportunity to experience it all at your aviation 'candy store'. It means the world to me, and I am sure it means the world to the fine young students supported by the Dahl Scholarship. It was a sad week with the passing of Sandy Dahl for the Dahl family, the fund, and the friends and supporters. I am sure that the Dahl's spirit would long live through the fund, and I am so greatful that you- Greg, Denny, and your fellows, along with us at Flyertalk, are standing together to support that.

Thank you again for this opprotunity. I am happy I had the 'winning raffle ticket' but I am even happier that we all, together, as a community of flyers and aviation fans- stand at the right side of right, and support the aviation aspirations of the new generation. Seeing the happy visitors in your 'hanger' makes it clear that we must do it for them.

All the best, and may the spirit of the Dahl scholarship and family long live,

DLroads

PS- uploading pictures, but in the meantime, here is one (not of our plane, though, just a nice sunny day)

"Captain"
by Rick Barlow

When you call me "Captain",
If I took a poll,
Would find few comprehending,
The price I paid, the toll.

To wear four stripes upon my sleeve
Laurels o'er my brow,
And sit in high commanding places,
To peer beyond the prow.

The hours, days, months, years,
And "why is daddy gone?”
The awful, silent, empty nights,
My wife has sat...alone.

The missions flown in distant lands,
The friends forever gone,
Or seeing ONCE the havoc wrought,
With merely human hands.

The dead of night, red eye flight,
Begun at dusk till early dawn,
Or why I always had to fight,
For simple pleasures, mow the lawn.

Bearing souls to many places,
Joyous, anxious, wanting faces.
For their safety ne're abstained,
Fatigue endured, and meals refrained.

My honored craft and how this hand
Will place you soft upon the land,
And all for "love" you can not see,
No one would know, 'tis not to be.
