Since you are doing this as a planned, multiday stay, I don't think this would fit the definition of a MR. A MR is nothing more than a quick trip to a place you don't want to go to in the first place just to earn status/miles, all because of a really cheap price. Some will leave the airport to see something of interest, others will get right back on the plane and head back home.
But don't despair, you want to maximize you miles. To help we need to know which carrier you want to earn miles on.
Look at adding out of the way routings, ie, LAX-MIA-NYC-ORD-DFW-LAX.
As a real world example, a few years ago I was in BOS and needed to get to FRA. I routed BOS-LAX-ORD-FRA.

Hi sorry!
ok so
I prefer american airlines.
I looked up ways to go into their hubs which I think are in DFW and St Louis.
LAX-DFW-EWR?
or LAX-DFW-STL-EWR?
How would I be able to maximize the miles on AA/Oneworld?

Post what you've found and the price for it. Note the max price you'd be willing to spend.
Do you have any time requirements of being in a certain place at a certain time? If so, a MR may not be a good idea. Things can always come up that throw off schedules and you may be stuck.
Not really much creative routing typically for a trans-con. may add some miles but you have to decide if its worth the risk of a mis-connect, mechanical, or weather issue.

So your goal is Gold status?
Look at a Gold Challange over on the AA section. 5K points earned during a 90 day challanege will get you status.

you can do sna-lga via ord for $600 & get ~ 8600 eqm if you qualify for the promo....
the trip you posted above would get ~6800 eqm w/promo...but check my mental math...

if you checked my math, you found that its about 8400 mi...
edit to add....sfo-ord-sfo is ~ 8800
if you search aa.com by schedule, the mi for a segment show up on the right.....you can also use where we fly to get the mi iirc...

I just read on tpg that you get double eqm's on flights from LA-DFW or LA-BOS. should've done an extra segment SNA-DFW-BOS-LGA & LGA-BOS-DFW-SNA
Oh well

SNA-ORD-LGA-LGA-DFW-SNA

why did you do dfw on the return?....it doesn't get the 2x eqm....only ord to/from sna...it was the same price going thru ord both ways.....
info is there on the register page.....
re lax-dfw-bos, the prices seemed to be quite high, particulary w/ getting to/from ewr.....
edit to add....
lax-dfw-bos rt is about $900 plus then getting to ewr area....but does get 10k+eqm....
i'm sorry if my sna-ord-lga suggestion led you to think that sna-dfw got the 2x....
