I am travelling to copenhagen from jfk New York and there is a 23hr connection time at helsinki on the finnair flight. I will have checked bags too. Is it possible to leave the airport with my checked bagss and check in to a hotel for the night and then come back and recheck bags 23 hours later and also go thru security for the flight to copenhagen?
My biggest concern is that since it is technically a connecting flight, will the check bags come out with me or will they stay "inside" awaiting connecting flight. Thanks.

I don't think this will be a problem. If this was your return journey, it might be a bit tricky since the AY check-in might believe that you won't take the last flight at all. Simply ask them to check the luggage only to HEL. Since your connection is overnight, it should really not be a problem. You may want to have your hotel reservations for HEL and CPH printed if against odds you'd need to try to convince the check-in agent that you are indeed taking the HEL-CPH flight.
AY ground crew at JFK are usually very friendly and will go out of their way to make you happy. This is also the only outstation where they still have their own ground crew.

Thanks. Why is it so hard to believe the 23 hour layover for the ground crew? I would assume lots of people do this all the time to take advantage of a good sightseeing opportunity ??

Often AY tickets are cheaper if you begin and end your journey somewhere else (Tallinn, Moscow etc.). Sometimes people who actually want to stop in HEL have tried to take advantage of this and try to check their baggage only to HEL instead of TLL or wherever. Or so I've been told.
But enjoy your layover! Some recent tips:

yes i do notice that. how weird is that? prices to helsinki alone are more expensive. btw, anyway to extend the layover to maybe even 48 hours so i get two days of sightseeing instead of just 1? i cannot see tickets with such long connection times. the max is 23 hours.

In any case, its easy as to get from the airport downtown. The bus, if I remember rightly, only costs €4!
If you get the chance, take the ferry over to the nearby island called 'Suomenlinna'. Nice little trip :)

Very true..remember seeing the one very nice 'experienced' Finnish lady at the J check in for the last 10 years or so..always friendly experience at JFK..unlike most AY outstations today..

OT: Wouldn´t you like LHR? I find service there consistently good. OOT: My best check in experience and overall experience as a OW airport is BA at SFO.

We love Helsinki. Did a stopover here several years ago.

Cannot really comment as I don't usually use the checkin desks at LHR, mobile BP and hand luggage or just transiting through.
OT:Regarding OW I also loooove Cathay at Hong Kong, both at Kowloon station or at HKG.
