How's this website for getting turned on to events? Anything better? Not sure we want to take in a traditional opera or theater show. Would love to ge a better feel for the current music culture. Recs?

The Beijinger is solid. Also check out Time Out and City Weekend. Others will recommend That's Beijing as well, but I'm not much of a fan. (The Beijinger used to be TBJ, but lost its name about 5 years ago, and there is now a new TBJ... confusing I know.)

Apart from large music festivals and one off concerts, Beijing isn't especially event driven. Now that the weather is getting nice, I advise you to focus on venues that have nice outdoor ares: Miga's, Stumble Inn... even Bang Bang (5 minute walk from the Renaissance).

Douban is the best site I know of for cultural events, it's in Chinese but easily navigable by non-Chinese speakers with the help of Google Translate.
