Hi all

I hope this is correct forum to posted... My mum injured her back while on a business trip to China, and we got her on a flight back to SYD on CA.

I have booked a QF flight from AKL to arrive 15 min before hers, so I can take care of her as soon as she arrives.

The question is that QF flight from AKL arrives to gate 30s, and from memory, the CA flight arrives to gate 50s, am I able to deplane and wait for her at her gate? Are the two areas accessible to each other?

Thanks in advance

Yes you can walk between the two areas. Once you arrive head towards immigration, then turn left and walk down the walkway that takes you to the other side of the terminal where you mum will arrive.

You might have to ask a ground staff member to see what gate it will arrive at since arrival gate numbers won't be listed anywhere (or check the departure board to see where the return flight to China will depart from - that will be the gate number)

Thanks so much for the information, it's great to know that I can wait for her at her gate...

So will I get stopped by any security at the airport? It does seem to be an unusual place for pax to walk....

Be useful if you have someone external who can look at the airports website and text you gate numbers.
Normally no-one around to prevent you doing this, although you will be the only one walking the wrong way down the pier.

Thanks, where can I find gate info? I tried the syd site, it only shows terminal, checkin counter and status... No gate info though....

Sydney doesn't post gate numbers on its website. Easiest way will be to check the departures screens near the transfer points when you arrive (which will display gate numbers) and go to the gate listed for the Air China flight departing for Beijing (which as a previous poster noted will be the same aircraft as the incoming flight).

PROVIDED it is left at the gate, and not towed off to admire the views over Botany Bay.

Thanks everyone for the help. I have just done it this morning, that was a horrible experience to have.

My QF flight arrived about 30 min early, and landed in gate 63. OK, that wasn't expected, so i was hoping things are my side. Heading down to the international transfer to check the departing gate of CA, it's not on there.... it only showed flights departing in the next couple of hours. So i walked up and down between custom and duty free, luckily, the duty free girls were extremely helpful, and they have a list of all arriving flights and gate numbers. CA was arriving at gate 59, which was perfect.

Now, here is the drama. Sydney had a horrible weather, as understood from the GA, a couple of planes were on hold north of Sydney, and the CA aircraft was one of them. The actual arriving time was almost 1 hour later than scheduled. So i had 90 mins waiting in an arriving area where i was not supposed to be. During this time, i have been hasseled by different groups of security and ground staffs, i have to say, most of them were quite reasonable, and as soon as i explained my situation, they would just leave me there. Until one Qantas ground staff came over and spoke to on of the security guys, then they came over and kicked out the area, in a very rude way.

To add to the problem, I got questioned by the custom what took me so long to get there. I told them the trueth, and got told off again... i wonder what they would say if i simply say i have trying to decide what to buy at duty free........

OK..... it may not be too much help to be there at first place, but diffinately not an experience i want to go through again.

Thanks again to all those offered help.

thanks for the update! I only saw this thread the first time today - didn't realise it was started a while ago. I was going to post that my greatest concern would be immigration/customs. I know they monitor arrivals and what passengers do after getting off the plane - so i was a bit worried you might get some strife from them.

Anyways - hope your mom is ok :)
