Garuda is set to resume direct flights between Jakarta and Auckland.

Garuda Indonesia president and CEO Emirsyah Satar and Auckland Airport chairwoman Joan Withers have signed a ‘memorandum of understanding’ which will see the Indonesian flag-carrier return to New Zealand six years after the airline left the land of the long white cloud.

Satar was unable to specify when flights would commence, saying only that Garuda will begin the direct service “as soon as market conditions and aircraft availability allow”.

I gather NZ's trial flights to Bali will remain just that, then.

Maybe not, but could we see or expect some sort of agreement between Air NZ and Garuda?

It come after Air New Zealand announced it would restart a seasonal Auckland to Bali service this year.

New Zealand's Ambassador to Indonesia David Taylor said the deal was a "game changer" for the relationship between the two countries.

"(It will) offer real benefits to both countries through greater business, tourism and education travel."

In February Garuda ordered 230 new aircraft from Boeing in a $US22.4 billion deal which includes 11 new A330 wide-body jets.

Prime Minister John Key, Trade Minister Tim Groser and a 26-strong business delegation are in Jakarta for a three-day trade mission aimed at boosting exports, as well as education and aviation services, to Indonesia.

Not necessarily

The direct flights to DPS are conditional on how much value there is in the market to fly direct from AKL. The current comptition to DPS - mainly JQ and SQ - both offer indirect options that can be cheaper and/or more comfortable than NZ seats-to-suit.
