Just a quick one... Visiting relatives in ZRH next week from UK. Looking to take some Stilton cheese as a gift for someone. Does anyone know if this is likely to land us in problems with Swiss customs? Should we avoid taking dairy?

Thanks in advance!

You can take dairy products into CH from EU countries, but AFAIK there is a limit of 5kg/pax and it has to be within your duty free limit of CHF 300.

The DF for dairy and overall limit are correct. However cheese does not apply.

Foodstuffs not listed (cheese, fish, etc.) are not subject to maximum amounts within the scope of the tax-free categories

See the link (http://www.ezv.admin.ch/zollinfo_privat/essen_trinken/00356/index.html?lang=en) here for details.

Just for future quick reference on limitation of animal products:

Foods derived from animals for personal consumption (not put to sale) from EU countries and Norway may be imported without control by the border veterinary.

So no issue with bringing as much Stilton as you want besides stinking up the luggage :D

Just as an aside to the story the 5L of milk limit is a nice little trap.
The typical packaging in supermarkets cross border for milk is 6x1L.
I know at least 2 persons who were caught (unknowingly) with 6L while driving back after shopping in France/Germany.

The 3CHF for the additional liter wipes out any saving on the pack of 6, and leaving 1L behind was not in their plans as well.
