If you do a search, there are quite a few threads about companion vouchers.
The consensus is that they are pretty much a worthless marketing gimmick.
This is based on the fact that you have to buy into an expensive flexible bucket before you can use them. Two points earning fares are usually cheaper.
There are exceptions, but they are few and far between.
The Amex upgrade voucher can be okay, but as you have to do an economy redemption, and pay about £300 in taxes and charges, as well as spending a lot of points, it is debatable if this gives the best value for your points - again, if you do a search, there are various threads about them.
