Booking an award ticket. Any thoughts on LH old F vs. LX new J vs. UA lie-flat J?
Star Alliance - What's better to Europe from West Coast US: LH old F, LX new J, or UA lie-flat J?kylelabrache Apr 14, 12, 12:43 pm Booking an award ticket. Any thoughts on LH old F vs. LX new J vs. UA lie-flat J? 1kBill Apr 14, 12, 1:14 pm To me, the choice is a no brainer: LH F. The only thing really deficient in LH old F is the IFE. The seat is fine, the food, service and lounges superb. will2288 Apr 14, 12, 1:18 pm To me, the choice is a no brainer: LH F. The only thing really deficient in LH old F is the IFE. Worth spending the miles for F. Second choice would be LX J. rankourabu Apr 14, 12, 1:19 pm Agree as above LH F > LX J >>>>>>>> UA J vbroucek Apr 14, 12, 7:57 pm 1) LH F 2) UA J 3) LX J Reasoning for 2 & 3: I found UA J seat on 747 much better than "new" often not fully functioning seat in LX J. Soft product is usually better in LX, but my last two flights were horrible. When boarded BKK-ZRH plane, the air con was not on and the temperature was as high if not higher as outside. Only few minutes after 30 minutes delayed push out, air con went full power to cool the aircraft. Similar situation when departing on flight ZRH-JFK during the middel of heat wave in Europe... UA-NYC Apr 14, 12, 8:15 pm Agree as above LH F > LX J >>>>>>>> UA J You can't even have UA J in the rankings for any routes w/777s until they're all re-configured ;) Santander Apr 15, 12, 11:31 am Another vote for LH F. As mentioned IFE sort of sucks (still beats old UA F) but on the ground and in the air LH F is superb. You'll get to see your old friend Johnnie wearing his blue label on board and eat caviar. Not everyone likes scotch and caviar but you won't close to that on UA. :p You can't even have UA J in the rankings for any routes w/777s until they're all re-configured ;) ^ JohnnyP Apr 16, 12, 1:03 pm Always worth checking if there's availability on NZ LAX-LHR as well. The onboard service and food/wine are fabulous, and IFE is ok, and the seat (same as Virgin Atlantic) is still very good. But if it was a choice between that and LH F, I might lean to LH F because of the great ground experience. Santander Apr 16, 12, 3:16 pm Always worth checking if there's availability on NZ LAX-LHR as well. While I'd still go with LH F, you bring up a good point. NZ's LAX-LHR is one of those seemingly totally unexpected fifth freedom routes, doing the Kangaroo Route the "wrong way". I'd consider it for the sole reason it's something different, but of course the actual C product is good too. kylelabrache Apr 16, 12, 11:23 pm Thanks everyone for all the great insight. Booked the LH F ticket! 1kBill Apr 17, 12, 1:57 pm Always worth checking if there's availability on NZ LAX-LHR as well. But it is not F. djefvert Apr 17, 12, 7:44 pm I'm looking to book my first Star Alliance award trip as well from the West Coast and my first thought was why is LH F an option? Isn't it a lot more miles than LX J or UA J? If the main goal is to sleep who has the best seat and overall experience in J? NZ, LX, LH, US or UA? Thanks! rankourabu Apr 18, 12, 2:07 pm I'm looking to book my first Star Alliance award trip as well from the West Coast and my first thought was why is LH F an option? The mileage difference can be as little as 10,000 each way. Small price to pay for first class over business. Seat IMHO, assuming new business product for UA. I have no personal experience with US, so cant comment. IMHO the best business class in *A together with the new OZ and NH seats. mecabq Apr 20, 12, 1:01 am Don't forget another advantage of LH F, which is the first-class terminal in FRA (or equivalent first-class lounges in FRA or MUC) on your return. I am assuming that you are talking about a round-trip award? djefvert Apr 20, 12, 1:39 pm Yes I'm looking at a roundtrip award and shooting for something March-April next year and need 3 seats available. Unfortunately it looks like LH F and NZ J is nearly impossible to find for any dates. LH J and UA J are no problem. I may have my best luck with US J in Envoy...thoughts? I'm open to any departure points in N. America and to anywhere in W. Europe. Just trying to maximize the experience since it will be 3 J seats and using quite a few miles on this award. Thanks! ACflyerDE Apr 20, 12, 3:52 pm US Airways' new Envoy seat that you can find on all of their A330-200 and partially on their A330-300 gets good reviews, might be worth a try. gpeso8 Apr 21, 12, 10:11 am I would avoid LH J. I'm not a fan of the seats at all. PHLyer82 Apr 21, 12, 7:07 pm US Airways' new Envoy seat that you can find on all of their A330-200 and partially on their A330-300 gets good reviews, might be worth a try. Depends where you start. If you are starting in CLT or PHL then US is a good option if on the A330-200 and some A330-300 as you stated, but if starting on the West Coast then you have to fly across county in Domestic F to PHL or CLT. LX C or F is also supposed to be really good, but also hard to find. You could always book UA or LH C and then watch availability and switch if something better comes around. If new UA C (PMUA) or PMCO C then that IMO is better than LH C. |
