In mid-Sept 2011 I was at Roma Termini Stazione, late morning, and there must have been 100 in queue at baggage deposit counter. I went outside to main street on side of station and found a walk up hotel to rent me a day room for 45 euros until 6:00 pm. Then I dropped off my bags, went around Rome, came back to hotel about 4 pm, slept an hour, took a shower, and went to station for express train to Fiumicino airport.

Worked out better than waiting in line for baggage deposit counter, and not know how long to reclaim bags.
