Looking to take my wife on a surprise long weekend trip. I'm looking to use points and I have so many it doesn't matter how many are required. We would enjoy a resort in an area that has a lot of local restaurants and areas to walk around. We don't care about golf or tennis, horseback ridding would be a plus, however not required. I'm a diamond and we both like properties that have great diamond breakfast and club lounges. Would prefer a location in the west coast like Arizona or California, however we're flexible. Look forward to your help.

Some properties that come to mind immediately:

HR Huntington Beach (directly across from the beach, located right next to downtown HB)
HR Scottsdale (one of my favorite club lounges, plenty of pools, Diamond access to Spa)
HR Mission Bay (well-known for exceptional breakfast at the Red Marlin, great Diamond treatment)

The Highlands Inn in Carmel would get my vote. We've always enjoyed the Point Lobos suite in the Lodge, and breakfast here is great.

My suggestions.

Highlands Inn - Carmel area to walk around - no club lounge however,
PH Aviara - haven't been but should be quite nice - north of San Diego
HR Scottsdale - Scottsdale/Phoenix
HR Tamaya - nice property - there is horseback riding that can be had on property (for a fee) - nothing around the property though.

I loved my trip as a Diamond to the HR Gainey Ranch in Scottsdale two years ago. Great spa, pools, and a nice club lounge. I'm sure horseback riding can be arranged through the concierge as it's so prevalent around there.

This was going to be my primary response.

And with the COS-PHX MR fare that just popped up, the wife and I were just contemplating a visit this fall!

Another vote for the Highlands Inn, although there isnt much within walking distance (in terms of restaurants etc). I would also add Hyatt Santa Barbara to the list.

Seconds for Highlands Inn (but read the thread and decide if its you because people like it or don't),
Tamaya, and Scottsdale if you can get a good price.

Downtown Palm Springs if you are in to funky. (Key West if you are really in to funky).

Not your preferred coast but my favorite 2-3 night stop in the country is Bonita Springs aka Coconut Point).

My favorites are:

Andaz (West Hollywood and San Diego)
Avia Napa (might be Andaz now)
Park City UT

I live in PHX so do not have a need to stay a Gainey Ranch...bit it is very nice.

HR Scottsdale Gainey Ranch tops on the list! Great RC, pools, spa!
Some of the other props mentioned here do not have RC or spas on property, particularly Avia Napa.

One more . . . Lake Tahoe . . . lots of activities (if you are not a skiers, wait for the snow to melt), great walks, gambling, restaurants not necessarily walking distance, but in the area (I assume you'll have a car), and a small but lovely spa.
