From August this year QF108 is showing as an A380 without first class... I was praying they didn't got through with this....

I don't see any reason to be surprised that they didn't change their mind; I doubt there has been a big change in number of people being prepared to cough up the fares for Qantas's 1st class product.

There is still 1st class options to New York such as Qantas to LAX and AA onwards or UA for those wanting to purchase it

I'd still prefer J on a QF 747 to domestic F on AA or UA.

UA domestic F can be the crappy standard seats / service (such as on 737s or 320s) or the premium product on the Trans Con PS flights (some 757s ?).
