Yesterday I received an email receipt from Hertz for a one day rental at TYS. Problem is that I did not rent a car that day. I did have a reservation but someone picked me up at AP instead. So, I called location and told them, that I did not pick up the car. They didn't understand what I was telling them at first and thought I was asking when the credit card hold would be removed. I said that isn't why I am calling and I explained it again. Agent said that it is impossible because they check everyone's I.D. I then asked to speak with manager and I was informed that she was out of town and I would have to call back next week. So we will see how this plays out.
Anybody have a phantom rental before?

At least whoever took the car got an upgrade! Whoever you are glad I could help.

Did you cancel the reservation? If not they probably put it through as a one day rental when they prepared the contract, and instead of canceling it when you didn't show up they somehow marked it as a completed rental.

Have you actually been charged for it or did you just get a receipt?

That's what I thought at first until I saw the car was driven 50 miles and had a fuel charge of $34!

I generally don't cancel. I might start doing this in the future.

Why would you not bother to cancel if you don't need the car?

What would be the need to cancel if they don't charge cancellation fee?

Because someone could go to the Hertz Gold area, note the names, create a fake picture ID, and drive off with your car... I'd rather not have my reservation floating out there for anyone to take, if I don't plan to show up for the car.

cancel the res if you are not using it. As a Gold person, the car is pre assigned and if not cancelled, the next person taking the car may have it in your name, like in my case and I had to call and straighten it out.

I presume that is what happened in my case.

What would stop them from doing this to someone who intends to show up? I think this is unlikely.

So it happened to you? What did they say to you and what proof if any did they request? When I called I asked if they video the gold counter and they said no. I know that some locations do video the counters.

I told the 800 number I forgot to cancel the reservation, that I had a illness in the family and was preoccupied with that. The lady sounded like she did not believe me, I'm sure this happens occasionally, but the charge was reversed and I still have been rented now for two to three years. I will tell you one thing, Hertz keeps track of the res that have been cancelled as my old co worker (I use to shuttle cars for Hertz) told me my reservation was canceled when I had multiple ones for the same date. Was a Five Star back then, Gold PC the last two years.

So that Hertz knows that you don't need the car. That would seem to me to be the appropriate action, even though there is no cancellation fee. YMMV

jeautk01, does your receipt show exactly 50 miles driven? that would be fishy, and suggests that the location may be padding with automatic fuel charges.

another explanation is that once they realized you weren't showing up, they released the car, gave it to the next customer, but mistakenly charged that customer's bill to your credit card.

oh, and i find it hard to believe a hertz airport location's manager is out of town for a whole week. someone is in charge of any business, any time it is open. if not the titular manager, then someone else.

Yes it was 50 miles exactly. The same name rental error was proffered as an explanation. They removed the charge I see the incident as closed.

I had a Gold reservation for Monday of last week. My trip got canceled, and I never bother calling Hertz since they don't charge for no-show.....NEVER AGAIN!

Someone took my rental, used it for the entire week, and charged it to my card. The funny thing is they didn't run up a huge amount of miles or anything, and apparently also topped off the gas before returning it! So I guess it must have been an honest mistake.

Either way, I will always cancel my reservation in the future, just in case.

Hertz was cool, and took the charge off my card right away.
