Hello,
Going to be in the Bergen area for a week in July doing a tour via Authentic Scandinavia. I'm looking for some tips on how the locals deal with the wet weather. I figure I'll end up buying an umbrella there but are there other products such as raincoats which would make sense? My understanding is that the rain comes and goes and you pretty much have to be ready at all times.
Thanks. :-)
Bergen is especially famous for its rain. But if you are travelling in the rest of Norway expect there to be rain at several times during your trip.
You have two alternatives that i use and which i find practical.
1. Is if you are only going for a city break and can easily go inside a shop or are just planning to hang in the city. Then use an umbrella, thats what i do.
2. if you are beeing out of city or doing more phsyical like walking in the mountains then i would suggest a rainjacket, goretex or similar. They are not always the nicest for citywear but are much more practical than dragging areound an umbrella.
I tend to go for jacket should there be rain all day and i have to be outside for some time. I would also reccomend you buy jacket before you come to Norway as it is very very expensive here!

Thanks, I think I will indeed get a raincoat in the U.S. before leaving. My plan was to wait until arrival but you talked me out of it. :-)

I live in Bergen, and in July you should be fine with a light raincoat :-) Hopefully you won't see a drop of rain, July can be really nice in Bergen.

I was in Bergen last summer, and I took a light rain jacket, which was fine. The weather was pretty changeable.

Since you folks are so helpful I have a follow-up question. :-) What's the bug situation in Bergen during the summer? I'm contemplating a hike amongst some of the local mountains and am wondering how bad it will be. (In the far northern US and Canada it's just about unbearable that time of year -- you're basically in a never-ending swarm.)

Can't speak locally, but in terms of rain gear, gore-tex rocks!
Played a few rounds of golf in what can be mildly described as torrential rain. Everyone else was miserable, the only part of me that was wet were my feet.
It breathes, so you won't sweat, and rain just beads and rolls off. Not cheap, but the best out there when it rains.

We are planning to go in late September/early October. And possibly take the Coastline cruise to North Cape. What is the weather like then?
