KLM Flying Dutchman - Upgrade to Business class fares differences
Hi
Usually when I fly from Shanghai to Amsterdam, I can upgrade to business class, if paying 300 euros. Which I think is rather fair with my income :-)
The question is, if I fly from Hong Kong, I have the opportunity to pay 1800 euroes, which is not going to happen with my income. Does anyone know why it's like this? I always fly the same class, seaman fare, even though I am no seaman, but a service technician. It's random for me if I get Hong Kong og Shanghai as departure airport, even though I am greatly satisfied if I get Shanghai.
Thanks.

Where do you that get amount to upgrade from? Online with Manage My Booking or is it offered for example while checking in online or at a kiosk?

I"ve gotten this on this route also several times (It's 339 btw).. It's only offered at online-checkin.. And when the flight is overbooked (and even the conversion of Business 1-5 to Economy doesn't give any releave to the situtation).. Any other case.. it's more in the 1600 to 1800 Euro range.
If you stick it out.. pay nothing, there is a 50/50 % change you get upgraded anyhow (Business eco of full business).. But if you don't want to take the risk (like me).. worth to Buy..
Business on this flight has on certain days low booking.. while economy is filled with chinese tourists.. Unfort.. Amsterdam upgrades at will (read.. who ever is late gets the best seat no real regard of status).. PVG upgrades based on status.. here you do get lucky ;) .. (normally at the gate).
I fly this route at least 10x a year.. so I've gone through most of the motions here..

Last time I travelled this route, I got the offer at my online check-in, 30 hrs before departure.
I have also seen it at the check-in kiosk at PVG. I upgraded at the online check-in, my colleague tried the same, he was unable to do so, so when we got to PVG the next morning, it was an option at the kiosk. B class had alot of empty seats, dont know about eco.

Allright, thanks this explains it:-) Yeah, you are probably right, it was about 2600 NOK for me, which is approx 340 euroes.
I am a gold member, but this never helped me out so far:-) I do not want to take the risk like you, it's worth buying the upgrade.
Another thing that really sucks if you have a non skyteam flight before your actual skyteam flight, you are unable to use online check-in. I have a lot of these domestic flights in China, before connecting via PVG to europe. Anyone know a trick for this? I really would like to at least upgrade to eco comfort, or for a reasonable price, business.

If you want Eco Comfort, use MAnage My Booking on the KL website, from 90 days before flying, to assing seats and buy your EC seat with a Gold discount.
If you have a single PNR (which is good if your inbound is late) then you cannot check in before you have checked-in for your inbound. You should be able to OLCI as soon as you have checked in for the first flight though, instead of having to wait until you arrive at PVG.

Allright, I didn't know that, never tried either, thanks. At least it gives some extra time in advance approx 4-+ hours to get a decent seat, instead of the center seat.

My experience with OCLI at PVG is that I have never been able to get it done.
Always receive the message "online check-in not possible at your departure airport" or something along that line.
Luckely my boss agreed that I can fly business when returning home :) so I don't really miss out on any opportunities.
Downside is that with overbooked economy, you get re-assigned seats at the upper deck and usually you I get the left overs.....(as a real Dutchman, always complain about something!)
