Online Travel Booking and Bidding Agencies - Priceline uses different payment method than I did

Here is a strange one. I bid on a hotel in London last night with my Amex. When I was reviewing my checking account online this evening, I noticed that the amount I bid with my Amex had been deducted from my checking account (my debit card is one of the cards in my Priceline profile). I guess I had better check my American Express account and make sure they didn't charge me too.

Has this ever happened to anyone else?

That is very strange indeed.

Never seen that before... hopefully not a regular glitch. I only have one credit card in my profile there... so would never have this problem.

Perhaps i should remove the debit card (a Chase card which used to give me UA miles).

You should only leave the card you want to use in the profile. It's possible they picked the wrong one, or that for whatever reason the Amex didn't go through and they used the other as a backup. They usually ask you to pick a card and enter the CCV code, so it's pretty hard as a user to mess it up, so I'd blame them.

I would definitely only have the card you want used in your profile...

As Mike says, assuming you had to put in your security code, the problem is on their side. Make it easy... only give them one option... :)

Interestingly, the receipt says AMEX and has the last four digits of the card, so it's not my imagination. :) I'm wondering if it indeed didn't go thru and they used the other as a back-up. Giving them one option is a good idea. Thanks.

I would especially avoid having a debit card in the profile. If something goes wrong, you have much better legal protections with a credit card.

I have definitely used the wrong three digit code before by mistake and the charge still went through at their site, so be careful having multiple cards and delete the other ones.

I was going to chalk this one down to your imagination but I guess that's ruled out. Would love to know the final outcome of this.

Since you asked. :) The pending charge was removed from my check card account and charged to Amex, as I originally intended. My guess is that the Amex charge didn't go through immediately and when it finally did, the pending charge was deleted from my bank card. I never talked to anyone.

Well its a good thing that you are in a financial position that this did not cause anything to bounce or be declined for insufficient funds that was supposed to come out of your checking account. This little "oopsie" could have quickly added up to hundreds of dollars in fees and headaches. As others have said, I would concur with the suggestion to remove your debit card number.

Again, as I said above, it was a pending charge. Nothing was deducted from my checking account.
