Asia - Wanted: A good place to chill on the beach for a couple of days on the Andaman Sea

Loose-ish itinerary:

Arrive BKK late December
Depart SIN or PEN early January

I've got about 7 days between those two. I might stay in Bangkok long enough to get a suit fitted. I am considering a sleeper train down the coast from Hualamphong station, having read about it on Seat61. I could depart for home out of SIN or PEN ( right now, booked to return home out of SIN, leaning towards changing to PEN because my God, are hotels in SIN expensive :eek:, and I don't lose extra time traveling through Malaysia getting to SIN).

I am more interested in local food and feel, a nice beach and meeting people than being in a luxury Westernized resort waited on hand and foot. I've been considering Phuket, Ko Phi Phi, Langkawi and Batu Ferringhi, knowing that it's peak season for European tourists, but I'm open to other ideas.

Thoughts?

Not bad, thanks a lot. This looks like the ticket.

(Problem is I'd likely have to fly in and out because the bus/train combo to get to Phuket would chew a lot of time up- but a BKK-HKT flight followed by a HKT-SIN/PEN flight should be doable. I've found a place in SIN that's reasonable if not luxurious, and one in PEN that's nicer.)
