These are fairly common fares from the USA.
Fares from US are cheaper than from France, which is possibly the most expensive origin point in the world (tanks AF for stifling competition).

Just looked on US for similar dates and they are charging 5k! Wonder if they will end up matching the fare?

As I am biased by my home residence, I can see that CX has a summer sale from Europe to most Asian destinations in J and the fare starts at less than €2,300 (BKK, DPS, ) on ultraLH and reasonably flexible. Other airlines also offer this level of fares to Asia. Will AFKl match with similar flexibility?
What is interesting is that CX also has a sale from France (a bit more expensive) in May/June. So the premium market from Europe must be quite soft given the eurozone crisis.
