When reserving Class H/Luxury with the added option of GPS. I'm getting a built in GPS or one of those stand alones (ie: Garmin)?
Location: DTW | Status: Preferred ...if that makes any difference

If you're adding a GPS, it will be stand-alone. My recommendation, though, would be to *not* include it in the reservation. If you get there and your car doesn't have one built-in, my suggestion would be to:
1. See if another lux nearby has built-in nav and ask for it instead
2. Go to the counter and add one.
If it's built into the car, it will be free :D

I agree with IAH, don't reserve it and check the car first. I do the same thing with satellite radio when I rent. If there is a car nearby with it, they shouldn't have any problem transferring you.
Advise: scout the lot for an Infiniti, fun car, and built in nav.

Without starting a new thread...
One other question, the XM option in a Luxury rental; standalone or built in?
:p

As was stated before, it's stand alone. Though some cars still have their trial subscriptions available, once it runs out, Avis does not renew it. If you rent from a location that keeps the keys in the car, you can check easily for a car that still has it activated. Otherwise you'll be running back and forth trying to find one.
