I'm happy that restrictions for US rental cars into Canada are easing,
What about the other way round? Are there any limits to taking a Canadian rental car across the border into the US? Assuming renter and driver are Canadian citizens and residents.
Thank you!

Never heard of any, except perhaps for some questions from CBP or CBSA agents as to why you rented. I believe this is because they think smugglers use rentals in preference to personal vehicles though I don't see the logic.
And some companies charge an extra fee for taking it across the border.

Thank you. That would be easy to answer. The current plan is that my partner just picks me up from Bellingham airport, then we'll probably drive right back to Vancouver.

I checked, those don't. :)
I've driven (Canadian-province-plated) rental cars over the US border several times. After they scan your plate, the officer usually says "Is this your car?" to which I reply "No, I rented it from Hertz" (or wherever). After that I'm on my way.
(Same deal coming back into Canada.)

Do it all the time. Not a problem at all. However, check your liability insurance coverage for limits and exclusions related to the US... just in case.
