First, let me start by saying I'm looking at this route only because it costs 32,500 miles on January 4, 2013.

I'd like to ask the experts around here what they think about the arrival at JFK and the departure from LGA. Would that even work? Stopover is 3 hours.. Do I just hop on a cab and go straight from JFK to LGA?

I'm looking to buy this to be honest. Should I even consider?
Also, why is there a note about stopping over in Frankfurt?

yeah that would be how you do it. it's not common but getting a cab, especially if you end up with a lot of flights landing at the same time, can be a pain and i would say you should call a car in advance. you'd have to be at LGA roughly at 1:15 at the latest which gives you two hours on the ground which is very, very tight, especially if you get backed up at customs at JFK. i think it's doable, but there's no margin for error though.

Your flight SIN-JFK is via FRA. There is only one flight that can go SIN-NYC without a stop, and this isn't it (it's an SQ all J configured plane).

Three hours with transfer from JFK to LGA is definitely tight.

Here are some factors to consider:

1. Do you have Global Entry? If yes, this is a + as it will very much speed you through immigration

2. Are you checking a bag? If no, this is another +, as even with Global Entry, you would have to wait for a checked bag to be delivered, which has been known to take up to 45 minutes at JFK

3. As far as the actual cab ride, it shouldn't be too bad. You're arriving at maybe the best time of day to avoid traffic on the Van Wyck Expressway. Without traffic, you're looking at about 25 or so minutes.

4. If you are checking bags, then you will need to re-check at LGA, and you will almost certainly get the quickest service from the curbside check-in.

5. Obviously, is your flight from SIN is delayed you're hosed, but there are quite a few flights from NYC to DCA, so you should be able to get rebooked.

So it's SIN to FRA, then FRA to NY?

If you're not hung up on DCA, you can go on UA JFK-IAD (will have to change terminals, but you avoid the often nasty Van Wyck Expressway).

Yes, that part of the itinerary is on SQ metal SIN-FRA-JFK on SQ flight no. 26

Absolutely, and the terminal change at JFK (from T-4 to T-7) is pretty painless on the excellent JFK AirTrain.

Wow. That is horrible. I don't think I should take this flight. I've done something like this before and I got really really sick.

Thank you everyone!!

I did JFK-LGA years ago. Took a shuttle. But with your tight schedule I'd hop on a taxi, especially if there's traffic and/or construction.

Ultimately, the issue is flying from SIN. It's just really, really far away.

If you're wiling to cough up some more miles you can fly SIN-IAD on UA via NRT. The flight time SIN-IAD is shorter than SIN-JFK, and, of course, you would be at IAD, instead of at JFK.

But it's about double the miles and still a very long flight.

Found this itinerary, for the same 32.5k mileage redemption:

SQ12 SIN-NRT-LAX (On the A380 as well) 1 1/2 hrs in NRT
UA210 LAX-IAD 4 1/2 hours in LAX.

My flight is Manila to Indiana to be exact, I just removed the first and last stop from the post above. So you can see how long this flight is going to be for me, IT STOPS IN EUROPE  But this flight costs only 30k miles, as compared to the 65k miles Narita stopover you are suggesting. :D

Is everyone here an elite member? I am going to be an elite after I take my next flight next month, and I read in the United website that elite members get to see more cheap reward tickets.

I am hoping maybe somebody here is kind enough to see whether there are 30k mile reward flights from Manila to Indiana anytime from January 4-6 2013. I am really trying not to spend 65k of my precious miles on a one way flight :)

I'll be very grateful if anybody can do the favor for me. Otherwise, I'll have to wait next month to see for myself!

Ill take a look, by Indiana, do you mean Indianapolis, or where? If Northern Indiana, you might just go to Chicago.

Edit: I could find nothing from Manilla to either ORD or IND. I did find a couple of options from NRT to IND, however, so you may want to play around with some Asian gateway cities, use your miles to go from there to IND, but then pay cash from Manilla to that gateway.

I guess if you have the miles to book the entire ticket, you have to weigh the option of paying some cash, or more miles.

I have a similar question: looking to make some award travel and one of the options is land at DCA and depart from IAD. I have 3 hours to do this.

Having never done this, my questions are:

- Is there a special designated transport set aside for these kinds of situations by UA or am I on my own?
- DCA/IAD is about an hour drive from my experience - what would be the best transport mthod?
- Would this even be feasible?

1. haha no way, on your own
2. probably cab
3. depends on how long you have for a layover time

The OP has 3 hours to make the connection from DCA-IAD. DCA doesn't have any International flights, so I presume the connection is a Domestic arrival. That said, with three hours, it should be doable. I did the same in reverse on a VDB and did it with the world's slowest cab driver in just over 45 minutes. The taxi would cost you about 70-75 dollars.

Though I must ask the obvious. Are you not flying inbound from somewhere that flies to IAD as well?

Yes Indianapolis :)

Thank you so much! :D:D

You are on your own between DCA and IAD. Three hours is doable if you have no checked luggage and there are no delays. I would book a car service and pay the extra to have the car service meet you at baggage claim (even though you don't have checked luggage).

IAD checkpoint lines can be lengthy and depending on your gate, the walk back from the Aerotrain at the C gates can take time.

I recommend a car service between JFK and LGA, to minimize waiting times. I recommend CARMEL, and you can book online. It's worth paying extra for them to meet you inside the terminal. A long time ago I did that transfer on a bus from a company called CAREY. Took about 30 minutes. Not sure if they're still in business.

Assuming there's saver availability in coach, MNL-SIN-FRA-JFK,LGA-DCA,IAD-IND would cost the same as a trip with fewer connections (such as MNL-NRT on NH, NRT-IAD-IND or NRT-ORD-IND on UA).

Carey went out of business in 1997.

Personally, I would take a cab over a car service, because there are always plenty of cabs at JFK, whereas you have to call your car and wait for him to arrive to you, which can take up to 30 minutes.

No checked luggage, not sure of delays though.

We have best friends in NOVA so they can pick us up. We then get to see them as well.

Thanks - I got the info I needed.

I do the IAD-ZHR-NBO route often. You will get a short stopover in Zurich on the way there, but a nice long one on the way back. Leave the tiny airport and go downtown for a run along the lake (http://www.flickr.com/photos/dcmetroblogger/sets/72157626762056376/with/5738728095/) or just breakfast.

As to DCA->IAD. Take a cab. Its done many times a day and 3 hours is plenty of time. I go from my home in DC to sitting in the IAD-ZHR plane in less than 2 hours.

Keep the IAH-IAD routings in your hip pockets in case there are delays xIAH. Once you are onboard, there's nothing to be done, but if your IAD-DCA is delayed, you can ask to be rebooked to IAD, presuming that leaves you time for your xIAD flight. Since you don't have checked luggage, you would just walk/ride between gates at IAD.
