U.K. and Ireland - car rental in london....
i need a car for a day later this month....i would prefer to pick up the vehicle somewhere around the marble arch / edgware road area if possible....
the cheapest rate i'm getting for a compact car is about £40....is that a good rate????it seems a bit high considering i usually get rates around $20 a day for rentals in north america....but then again i haven't rented in london for a number of years so have no idea what the rates are like....
are there any tricks on getting a lower rate????

It's not unreasonable - and remember that it includes insurance / CDW etc.
I don't know about others, but if you rent from Hertz the first day of the Congestion charge is also included (if you rent from inside the zone).
If you don't need it for a whole day, maybe Hertz on demand would work?

This is London not North America.;) sounds a fair rate for a weekday, you could shave a little off at the weekend. Both hertz and Avis have offices in the area and while generally an Avis fan their Marble Arch office is rubbish so consider Hertz.

Try sixt.com
Just looking and their Edgware Rd branch is asking £30 at the end of May but £77 for a day at the end of April.
Check it with your dates. You can save another 10% ish by paying it at the time of booking but it is not offering that option for some reason.

its actually a weekend rate....i realise rates are cheaper in the us but £40 for a weekend rate seemed a bit high....nevertheless, if that's the cheapest rate then i guess i'll just go with it....

Marginally more than I've been paying through the winter but not atypical for Spring into summer.

That isn't the real price, just so that it comes up in the searches earlier.
£40 a day for a weekend is a bit steep; you could certainly get it for less by going a little out of the city, but I doubt it would be worth the trouble.

Hertz on Edgware Road is fine, I use it. £30 per day inc insurances is my target price in London but tricky unless over a weekend. If driving out of London then do not pick up in the congestion charge zone. Heading west, Hertz Victoria is good for that reason.

i know....hence the smiley at the end....
