trying to book was-nyp for 4/20-4/22, and have to say that the website is confusing as heck...

1st, i finally realized that amtrak rewards and amtrack have different logins...

2nd, need help finding a fare... i was able to find $80 fare for the first leg of my trip this morning... (one of the afternoon acela express segments) by simply choosing adult in the passenger section and clicking on get discount... but for some reason i'm not able to replicate it again when i'm ready to book this afternoon... any ideas what could discount is associated with that fare? thanks!!

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8320/4.5.0.81 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)

Lowest Acela one-way for those city pairs is around $145, not $80.

$80.00 is the fare on the Carolinian and some of the North east regionals.

Acela much higher.

You save 40 - 60 minutes on Acela

You have one day left to book the Northeast regional to Washington and get 25% off

T&C Amtrak has lowered fares on the Northeast Regional. You can save up to 25% off lowest available fares when you book 14 days in advance. Just choose the Adult or Child passenger type when booking to receive the discounted fare

thanks!
the website says that the 25% will kick in automatically, but i'm not seeing how it works?
for example, the 178 ne regional from was-nyp on april 20 is listed at $153 and the 179 ne regional from nyp to was is listed at $49 on april 22... added both to cart and selected adult fare and nothing changed. are these the prices that include the 25% discount? seems like it would be cheaper if i booked with my student advantage card for each leg separately...?

thanks so much for your help!

These prices already include the 25% discount (which does not layer on top of any other discounts; if you try to use another discount, it will be applied to the full price).

Yes, however, last year or so they added a feature if both accounts had the same email address, you could switch between the two without having to login over and over.

It does appear they have stopped showing the full fare less any discount and now just show the net amount. I went in and pulled up the route you mention (selected first train each day) and there was no indication of any discount. When I changed to AAA Adult fare, it too, only showed the net amount, but also threw a pop-up saying the new fare was higher.

I like seeing just what the savings is when I select any particular fare. Reinforces my desire to use the discount, especially if it's substantial. Some fares have other issues like AAA needing to be 3-day advance purchase.

i called the customer service desk yesterday and this is what they told me...

for each of the trains, there are 4 levels of tickets, to include the booking 14 days advance discounts... once that particular ticket level is sold out, then the advance discounts don't kick in anymore... which pretty much sounds like like to me that they have discounted tickets only for trains they can't sell out...

anyways, bit the bullet and booked anyways... saved over taking a flight in terms of luggage and taxi charges... this is what happens when they are the monopoly on ld trains...
