My parents are travelling to India tonight via LAX-LHR-BOM. I did their online checkin. They have 4 bags for check-in. The boarding card says drop the bags at the "bag drop". What does that mean? They still have to go to the check-in counters and show passport, surrender their I-94 and all that, correct ?

Bag drop is an expression for expedited check in - since you've done it online, you'll see a different counter to the normal where they'll tag your parents bags, take the slip, and let you on your way.

LAX doesn't have a "different counter". They'll have to go to the check-in desk and show their passports.
If they are flying Upper Class they'll get a pass to the Air New Zealand lounge just upstairs from the departure gate.
