I will be in HKG soon and I am considering taking a round-trip on China Southern's new A380 HKG-PEK-HKG. Will I need a Chinese vias if I never leave the airport in PEK?

Many thanks.

Yes you will need a visa for this. It is not possible to get from the arrivals area to the departures area in PEK without going through immigration.

The "transit without visa" rules only apply if the first stop of the onward flight is in a different country to the last stop (or origin if only a direct flight) of the incoming flight, e.g.

HKG - PEK - HKG : not eligible for TWOV
HKG - PEK - ICN - HKG: eligible for TWOV
HKG - ICN - PEK - ICN - HKG: not eligible for TWOV
etc ....

You could fly back to MFM (or from MFM and back to HKG).

Well, of course they will if you're not doing a valid transit, but most of those guys are reasonably clued in about the rules.

That's fine, but you get 24 hours (in China) total.

Hi all...

Wondering if I need a travel visa for this transit...

It's Air China LHR-PEK; connecting to AirChina PEK-HKG; connecting to HKG-BKK (the destination) on Thai. Traveling on a US Passport.

Thank you for your help.

As long as your PEK-HKG flight is less than 24 hours after your LHR-PEK arrival then you do not need a visa. Hong Kong counts as an international destination, so this is a valid routing for TWOV (arrive from UK; depart to Hong Kong). The final end point (BKK in this case) is irrelevant.
