Texas - What to do in Austin with a 10 year old?

We have two days in Austin and want to try and find somethings that are fun for both her ( the 10 year old) and us. We are going to do the caverns in the Hill Country on our drive from San Antonio but once we get to Austin I am a little stumped. Everything that I have done there has been "grown up" if not downright "adult":p

Suggestions? She is a tomboy, loves horses and the outdoors.

Thanks!

Depending on what time of year you go, you should look into Schlitterbahn en route. For a cheaper option, tube the Comal or Guadalupe.

In Austin itself, Capitol tour, Congress Street bats, Zilker Park, wake boarding at Town Lake (Lady Bird), UT Campus, etc.

Here is a link for the bats. Go at sundown and take an umbrella. @:-)

Traveling with a 10 year old? There ought to be at least a modest educational component in your plans...

Bullock Texas History Museum up the street from the Capitol.

LBJ Library on the campus just off IH35

The Capitol itself

You can go for a hike and swim at Zilker Park. You can hike the greenbelt and swim in Barton Springs pool. I believe part of the greenbelt trail starts behind the pool so you can park at the pool, go hike and then finish with a swim.

You can take a walk around the hike and bike trail (goes around Town Lake downtown). There are also several canoe and kayak rental docks on Town Lake.

Downtown there is the Austin Childrens Museum, Bob Bullock Museum (with an IMAX theater), the Duck Tour (amphibious truck), or a Segway Tour (there are several companies I see giving tours).

You could try a hike to Sculpture Falls in the Greenbelt off MoPac and Loop 360. There are a ton of trails back here to wander around on.

If you're up for a little drive, Hamilton Pool is really cool to walk down to, or an even farther drive, Enchanted Rock/Fredericksburg are really cool family oriented areas.
