got an email about this, are ANA totally oblivious to other "American" promotions forgetting that their miles are pretty useless now with the fuel surcharges, a 5K sign up bonus seriously!!

I agree that the sign up bonuses are measly (though for Japan they are pretty standard), but why do you think NH miles in particular are useless? Most airlines charge fees and surcharges on their award tickets -- American airlines will certainly follow. Also, thanks to the distance-based award chart there are some deals to be had.

as long as there still exist programs which dont charge why would you use one which does.. the distance based awards + Fuel dont beat the no fuel options..

Well, NH availability is much better when redeeming NH miles, for one...

Obviously I agree that no fees are better than some fees, but calling NH miles "useless" because of that is rather hyperbolic.

didn't mean to insult anyone.. I did say "pretty useless" it's just that NH miles did have amazing value Iv'e done F on VS (for 63K and $150 in tax) a few times that was one the best mileage redemption's around add on ~$700-800 in Fuel and UA becomes way more attractive.. paying double the price is considered "useless" in my book. Id love to be proven wrong -- please provide one itinerary which is more worthwhile now using NH miles for rather than partners..

Short-haul flights are generally a pretty good deal with ANA miles. Long-haul economy is a very bad deal.
