Apologies if this has been asked before - I haven't found it in search results.

I have a 5+ hour layover in BRU next week, sadly between 0515 and 1015 :( . Now I can head for one of the apparently unremarkable lounges in the airport but 4+ hours there are likely to drive me demented. Can anyone suggest a more stimulating alternative given the early hour (eg escape the airport for a couple of hours, take the train into the city, have breakfast in a characterful early-opening café, browse a food market, etc?). I have seen lots of good suggestions on previous threads about chocolate shops, bars, museums etc - just not applicable at 6 am...

Any ideas welcome - otherwise I'll resign myself to lounge limbo...

Thanks!

If you have never been to Brussel before, you should at least take the train to the Central station, and from there go for a short walk and visit the Grote Markt / Grand-Place. And I'm sure you'll find at least a few places that can serve you a coffee and breakfast at that time... :)

We followed kahuna1993's advice (post #44) and LOVED Wittamer (http://wittamer.com/en/index.php) on 12 Place du Grand Sablon. ABSOLUTELY DIVINE. We had breakfast there and ordered the "le petit déjeuner" for 11.50 euro. It came with freshly squeezed orange juice (not as sweet as I had hoped, but it was good), espresso/tea/chocolate, 2 pastries of your choice, and two small chocolates. A bit pricey but notice the Jaguars, BMWs and occasional Ferraris parked outside so you know it is a top-notch place. :D Menu is here (http://www.wittamer.com/documents/en/cafe/Wittamer_cafe_livingroommenu_en.pdf). They open at 7 am (Except Mondays 9 am) so you can hop the train to Central and walk there, we went to the Grand Plaza then went over to Wittamer, nice walk although some of it is a bit uphill so be ready. If you are looking for small gifts there is a Wittamer shop next door with amazing "Macarons" (no idea how to translate it except they are good).

We were traveling with our 4 year old and she loved Wittamer's and the nice walk around the city. Wonderful 4 hours.
