Question on behalf of a non-FTer-

How and how long it takes is region specific (at least it was). When I switched to American region, all it took is just one phone call and they switched me to American region immediately. When I switched to Asia region, I had to fill out a form and fax it back to the JMB HK office and it took a day or two.
But things might have changed since then because I did my switches ~10 years ago. Anyone has more recent experience?

Yes, in this case they will be treated as AA flights even though you are on JAL metals. So the AA table below would apply, and you will receive 50% redeemable miles and 50% non JAL Group flight FOPs if you choose to credit the flights to JMB.
are u saying I will get 50% redeemable miles and 0% elite miles if
I go with JAL or will I get 50% of each ?

Yes, you will get 50% redeemable miles, 50% elite qualifying miles (aka FOPs), and each flight will get 1 elite qualifying sector.
But the FOPs and elite qualifying sectors are counted as non-JAL Group ones. This year JAL has changed the elite qualifying requirements which require half of the FOPs are earned from JAL Group flights if you are qualifying by FOPs and half of the sectors are earned from JAL Group flights if you are qualifying by sectors.

Flew my first JL flight the other day (JL735 NRT-HKG)
I noticed they put small stickers on top of the seats on a few pax in the Y-cabin. What could that have been?
I could not figure out what the pattern was. I saw 3-4 stickers on very different pax, one beeing a small child and only one in that family of four that got sticker. Food allergies is my best guess, but it just seems to many cases. Anyone who knows?

Those are stickers for special meals. If you order one, you will get a sticker so they know who to deliver the meal to (and not to give you another meal during regular meal service :p)

What to expect in Business NRT-ICN (6:00pm) and ICN-NRT (8:00am) on 767? My reservation indicates a meal will be served, does JAL serve western style meals on this route? Will be coming in on the new BOS-NRT on 787, looking forward to it.

I haven't flown on this route personally but I could tell you what they serve onboard in business class. Below are the links to the April menu (Japanese). The ex-NRT menu has pictures showing the meals.
As you can see, you only have one Japanese choice on NRT-ICN which consists of sushi and some small items
On ICN-NRT, since you are on the JL950, your menu is different from the rest of the ICN-NRT flights. But it again only has Japanese option. Below is the google translate for your ICN-NRT menu

According to oneworld website (http://www.oneworld.com/ffp/lounge-access/), it's 05:45-08:30 and 18:00-23:30
Last time when I was there, they started cleaning up before 8:30 as everyone has left for the morning flight already.
According to oneworld website, you will have access to any business class lounge at NRT based on your class of service.
Customers flying First or Business Class have access to the equivalent class of lounge regardless of their frequent flyer status. (First Class passengers may be accompanied by one guest travelling on a flight operated and marketed by a oneworld airline).
But in reality, some lounge dragons might deny you access. E.g. it happened when one of the FTers tried to access CX lounge with a JAL business class ticket at HKG a while back.
Also, JAL has recently added a 3rd lounge during morning hours to solve the congestion problems. Passengers on some morning departure flights are invited to the JAL Lounge with American Airlines (which is just the enhanced Admirals Club). So if you are on JL717, you will be invited to use that lounge instead of the usual Sakura Lounge. More info in the thread below.
I've been following your very helpful posts in FT, and I just got my JMB account. Now I am looking at the various JAL CCs. I know they have one particularly for US residents but they have at least 3 or 4 more for those with Japanese bank accounts - JAL Club A, JAL Club A- gold, JAL Diners Club, (?)American Express.
I was wondering what are the features, benefits, costs of these cards? Are the bonuses, shopping "miles", sector miles included in the FOP program? Finally is it very difficult to get a Japanese bank account/CC? I live in the US but I have relatives and friends who live in Japan. Thank you.

I am not an expert, but I'd say it is difficult to get the japanese bank account if you are not japanese. You will need to be in japan on a non-tourist visa for a period of more than 3 months . Even then you may not be accepted by all banks.

Welcome to the JAL Forum, FT and the JMB program, traveller101!
As stated by intuition, Japanese bank accounts are not easy to get if you don't live there. Even if you can somehow set up an account in Japan, you might have some hard time getting your credit card application approved without some kind of credit history.
The JAL Card in Japan provides a lot more benefits than JAL affiliated credit cards in the overseas market. Although miles earned through JAL Card purchases are not counted towards your JMB status (i.e. no FOPs on redeemable miles earned through purchases), you get other unique benefits such as first flight bonus in every calendar year, JAL Card targeted promotion such as extra FOP bonus, redemption discounts, and bonus miles on JAL flights.
For a quick comparison of fees of JAL Cards, you can refer to the Japan region website below (Japanese only)

I have really, really a newbie question.
I am based out of BOS. Travel fairly frequently to East Asia. So far, on UA (don't even get me started about Delta...)
157K last year, 95% East Asia and India. Perhaps closer to 200K this year.
I am not ready to ditch 1K, but I am considering a second airline. And it cannot be Delta. JAL seems the obvious choice.
1- How easy it is to earn qualification miles? Do most of their fares carry 100%?
2- One you become an elite, do you get upgrades? How does it work? I read their Web site, and from what I can understand, they are phasing this out... this is a deal-breaker for me, because the only way to C is through an upgrade, company policy.
3- How easy is it to redeem?
4- Anything ressembling E+? Or only sarcophagus-sized seats? When upgrades cannot be obtained...
5- What would be the best features JAL offers that would entice customers to move their business to them? Besides smiles -always appreciated, of course, but anything beyond that?

Most discounted fares don't earn 100% miles. Usually 50% and 70%. More details can be found here: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/15661228-post29.html
With your travel pattern, it shouldn't be hard to earn elite status. You probably just have to travel 2-3 roundtrips to become JMB Crystal if you book under fares that earn 70% of miles. But I would suggest to aim for JMB Sapphire for the first year though. You will know why once you receive the package ;)
Yes, they are discontinuing upgrade points. The only option to upgrade on international flights will be using your redeemable miles. No more elite only upgrade instruments.
In general it's pretty easy to redeem for award as long as you are flexible. Of course redeeming F award will be considerably harder than redeeming for an economy award for example.
No free upgrade for elites on international flights. There are premium economy seats but you will need to book with booking class Y/W/E to seat there unless there's an op-up. But JAL does reserve some seats for elite priority seating in Y, e.g. exit row.
Not sure for other people, but for me, it's the way they treat passengers even when they are traveling in Y without any status. They will take good care of you. That's what it kept me to stick with them for this long :) Maybe other's can chime in as well :)

This might be a little bit of a guessing game, but I need to buy a specific flight combo (award connection) and the prices are absolutely outrageous for no apparent reason. Here's what I'm trying to do:
My question is about JL releasing seats. JL91 on 7/2 is virtually empty, but they're only selling some very pricy seats, which really kinda negates the DFW-NRT RT award on AA. RT total would be nearly $1300USD just between TYO-SEL on those flights. When will JL release some of the lower fare buckets? It seems like we're within a reasonable window now, but I'm getting worried about getting a fair fare. Any insight appreciated...

if so, for a domestic flight from FUK to HND, how much time do you really need to check in. 45 minutes before flight? flight leaves at 8:00am.

I am not sure. I never look at HND-GMP but I did look at HND-HKG. It seems like these HND flights are really hard to get because they know they can sell the seats. A quick random check for May and June flights shows similar availabilities. Lowest booking class I saw available was K.
I would go for the NRT flight if you want to go ahead to plan the rest of your travel. Otherwise, I am afraid waitlisting is the only way to go for now.

They only request you to pass security 15 min before departure and arrive at the gate 10 min before departure. If you are connecting from a domestic flight to an international one, cut-off time is 30 min before departure. So for domestic only flights, you don't have to check-in 45 min before flight.

Hi there - I need some help with a Yokosu fare booking. I must say at the outset it was incredible value compared to buying each sector individually!
I have booked HIJ - HND - ISG later this month with a return from ISG to HND in early June.
1. The JAL agent (in London) told me that seat reservation is not possible for these bookings - is that correct? I have BAEC Silver status so have this option on BA bookings, but this did not change anything in the agents mind? How can I make sure that me and the OH get to sit together, in an exit row?
2. The agent told me that "if" J class is available, this can only be done on the day at check in at the airport? I cannot do this before hand.
3. These bookings are not visible on JAL.com and there is no MMB available for the booking. So apart from an E-ticket, I have no other information.
Is all this true and is this the price you pay for booking the Yokosu ticket? It seems a little archaic for the 21st Century in a country that likes to lead to the way in technological innovation.
Can anyone suggest a way of achieving the 3 objectives above? @:-)
Thanks in anticipation.

1. Seat assignments can be done online. Just get the JAL PNR and login to pick your seats. Seat reservations for domestic flights open up 2-2.5 months before departure. Given your flight is later this month, you should be able to do it online now.
2. Yes, you can only upgrade to Class J at check in in Japan due to fare rules. It's not because of IT limitations.
3. You need a JAL PNR. You can enter your BA PNR on checkmytrip.com to retrieve your JAL PNR if you have not already done so.
Enjoy your flights :)

Sorry I have no idea. But the online check-in systems for domestic and international flights are different. There's no OLCI for domestic flight. You just pick your seats, print the 2D barcode and go to the airport on day of departure. So I assume the answer is no unless you get a way to print out the 2D barcode beforehand.

They should be able to assign you a seat over the phone. But since it's an Avios redemption, you might want to check with the BA folks. They probably have more experience on this.

Does JAL offer open jaw awards? and if so, is it only bookable through their telephone number?
Assuming you are talking about JAL flights award with JMB miles, some open jaw bookings are allowed but not all.
Award tickets are issued for round-trip travel. The cities of departure and return must be in the same area or within the same country.
For example, if you want to reserve LAX-NRT-HKG//PEK-NRT-LAX, you can just do it online as both are within area 1.
The part I am a little bit confused about is they gave an example of NRT-SIN//SYD-NRT where award levels differ. But SIN and SYD belongs to different area. So you might need to call JAL to ask them their definition of area if your cities don't belong to the same redemption zone.

List of domestic lounge can be found here: http://www.jal.co.jp/en/dom/lounge/
Unfortunately ISG is a tiny airport. There's no JAL domestic lounge.
While HND-ISG is the longest scheduled domestic flight, it does not have class J service. It is operated by JTA and load factor is usually just around 50%. JAL/JTA probably believes they can make more money by deploying the 734 with class J somewhere else. It's more about yield than flight length. I suggest try to get the exit row for more legroom? Or given the load is usually low, you might be able to get the entire row to yourself if you sit in one of the regular rows with movable armrests.
There's no equivalent of Concorde Room at NRT. F passengers and ow Emerald shares the same F lounge.
Enjoy your stay in Japan :)

I need to buy RT HND-OKA flights and noticed while researching pricing that the fares were $400pp less on the JAL Japan Domestic website (http://www.jal.co.jp/en/dom/) VS. The Americas booking site (http://www.ar.jal.com/arl/en/).
Two questions:
1) Will I be able to confirm the booking on the domestic site for the cheaper flights without having a Japan billing address?
2) If so, I noticed on the domestic site, even in the English version, they parse the names as family name || given name - which makes sense if you are Japanese, but this means my name is getting confirmed as Smith John instead of John Smith. Is there a way to get around this, or does it not matter since JAL will know I used their website (all ex-pats booking domestic flights in Japan must experience this?). Or do I need to call them and incur possible fees?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Welcome to the JAL Forum and FT, aschulke!
Sorry I missed your question earlier. But here are the answers
1. Yes, you can book on jal.co.jp (Japan region website) with a foreign address. As a matter of fact, I bought one from that site about a month ago without problem. However, you might not see the charges on your credit card until a while later. It took 9 days for mine to appear and other people are seeing similar delay in posting as described in the following thread.
2. You shouldn't have problem. They can tell which one is the first and last name. And they don't really check for ID on domestic flights anyway (shh...don't tell anyone ;))
While discounted roundtrip HND-OKA is priced reasonably, there are two fares designed for visitors you might be able to take advantage of to lower your cost. But you need to travel to Japan from overseas on a single roundtrip ticket otherwise you don't qualify. And there are of course blackout dates too. Below are the details.

Regarding your international award chart for flights on JAL, how does the discount mileage promotion work? Is it valid for awards originating in North America? The website mentions flights departing or arriving in Japan, but the award chart shows it in all regions, so can you please advise.

I assume you were asking about this campaign http://www.jal.co.jp/121campaign/discount/inter/2012/index_en_world.html
Notice there's a link next to the table that says "Click here for the required mileage of other sectors during the campaign period." and I have done a search (Asia 1 to North America) to confirm it does apply to other routes as well. A simple way to check is to login to your JMB account and search for awards on dates you wish to travel on. It will display the discount redemption option if it applies.

I'm flying SIN-HND tomorrow night which arrives at the delightful hour of 0550. I'm in J, so I believe I can use the arrivals lounge at HND under the current (extended) promotion. I know there are showers there, but what is the food like - enough to assemble a small breakfast, as I doubt there'll be one on the plane.
Cheers...

I haven't been to the HND arrival lounge myself. From what I heard, they don't have much food. But they do have freshly baked bread from Maison Kayser. You can check out the offerings here from fumitani's trip report: http://milepoint.com/forums/threads/jan-feb-2011-intra-asia-on-sq-jl-tg-kix-sin-bkk-uth-bkk-hnd-oka-itm-pics-galore.3226/page-2#post-73491
The sushi isn't part of the offering :p
I believe they serve breakfast on SIN-HND. At least the menu looks like a breakfast one to me. They also serve sandwiches as snack too.

Do you mean dinner + breakfast, or just breakfast? If only the latter seems odd on a flight leaving at 2150 local...

I have no idea when they will serve the main meal. It's possible they only serve the meal 1-2 hours before arrival. But I have no previous red-eye experience with JAL. fumitani probably knows more about this.
When the flight departs the C cabin remains dark until about 50min-1hr before arrival to serve breakfast (depends on the load). Mine went bright 2 hrs before arrival the last two times because of terrible landing weather.
BKK-NRT red-eye leaves at 23:10 while BKK-HND red-eye leaves at 21:40. I assume SIN-HND should have similar service (I am trying to confirm BKK-HND and BKK-NRT have the similar meal service schedule with fumitani) But from the menu itself, they have the same main dishes. Since BKK-HND departs earlier, it has a separate snack menu (just like SIN-HND has a snack menu consists of sandwiches).

I am flying sfo-hnd-sin-hnd-sfo for work in J with a stopover in Tokyo on the return. My current flight from sin-hnd is the red eye on 16 June. I would prefer the morning flight that day or the red eye on the 15th as I have never been to Tokyo but they are J0 even though there are fewer seats assigned. Any reason why these flights are J0? I have an alert set on expertflyer but no hits yet. If I book the morning flight in Y will I be able to change to J if something opens up? I think my booking code is D.

I have learnt that some people just don't select their seats in advance. I have seen flights with F2 but only 1 seat assigned!
JAL is still selling seats in business class on SIN-HND on June 15 but I saw 0 in all C booking codes. You might want to just waitlist for that flight and call them to see what's going on as JL036 is wide open according to jal.co.jp
You probably know about this already, if you end up flying to NRT instead, you would have to bring your checked luggages all the way from NRT to HND. You cannot check them through all the way to SFO in this case.

Just wondering how long JAL has permitted liquids in carryons[ for domestic flights]? My recent FUK to HND flight required me take two bottles of some whiskey I picked up at the Yamazaki distillery and put them in my carryon. Very nice to see this change. If I recall correctly, the liquid ban only applies to international flights in Japan. So it has always been allowed as far as I remember. They always just take your bottle and put that in a machine. If you get a green light then you are good to go

You won't get the flat bed nor too much privacy. JAL uses the recliner seats on this red-eye flight.
The comfort and privacy are a far cry from Cathay. Although I preferred the 767 to the dated 777 seats.

But you are comparing a regional product to their long haul one though...although NEO seat still doesn't have the same level of privacy (and possibly comfort if you want lie-flat bed) that CX's latest long haul J seat has

Red-eye flights (only)
BKK-NRT
BKK-HND
BKK-KIX
In C before departure (usually) staff will hand out a bottle of water bottle, plastic amenity kit, and documents on the ground. Once the flight takes off the light pretty much remains dark until 2hrs-50min before landing. It all depends on weather before landing.
In Y after take off the lights come on and they serve drinks. (on rare occasions I have gotten water bottles in Y (because of my status?). Breakfast is served 2hrs-1.5 hrs before arrival.
The only time breakfast was served late....about 50 minutes prior to arrival was BKK-KIX and load was consisted of only 36 people...C had 7 and Y had 29 people.

Well, at this point my alternative would be sitting in Y for ITM-NRT. It's part of an international award (NRT-YVR is C), so I don't want to buy a separate ticket and risk issues, but on the other hand, 10 across on a 777 isn't my idea of fun, so I'd like to step up, even if I have to pay to do it. I guess the root of the problem is that AA, for whatever reason, insists that they can't book domestic class J awards on JL.

2) which fare codes JL uses for (upgraded) award inventory?

Hi. Thanks for the helpful thread.
Can you explain how mileage and FOP earnings work for JL-coded flights operated by another oneworld carrier?
I will probably fly the following itinerary in a couple of months, in standard discounted coach (70% fare buckets for JL):
NRT-LHR (JL-coded and operated)
LHR-BRU (BA-coded and operated)
BRU-HEL-NRT (JL-coded but operated by AY)
If I try to book this on the website, it displays the flight miles as:
国際線 [成田(東京)=ヒースロー(ロンドン)] 4,354 = 6,220 x 0.7
国際線 [ブリュッセル=ヘルシンキ] 0 = 0 x 0.7
国際線 [ヘルシンキ=成田(東京)] 3,660 = 5,229 x 0.7
フライトマイル 合計 8,014マイル
So it doesn't take the BA flight into account, and counts the BRU-HEL segment as zero!
Is this really how miles are calculated (I hope not!)? What about FOPs?

Can't be sure without knowing the booking code. But it is possible that JAL website has a bug in calculating miles accumulation when the flight does not carry a JL code. You probably should give JAL a call to figure out the booking class.
You probably was looking at the BA400 as your connecting flight? If you don't mind waiting for an extra hour, there's a JL coded flight operated by BA. You probably will earn more miles and FOPs with the JAL coded flight.

Thanks for your reply! I don't think my booking is final yet (the company's travel agent is handling it), and it is likely to be in higher fare buckets as what you can get on JAL's website at the moment, but if I look at the booking codes on ITA for the same routing as found on JAL's website, here's what I get:
— the NRT-LHR-BRU component books into JL H, fare code HZAW1JP;
— the BRU-HEL-NRT component books into JL L, fare code LZAX1JP.
(The price given by the travel agent suggests that my actual ticket will be H both ways, but from what I understand, H and L should earn the same number of miles and FOP, right?).
I'm not too concerned by mileage earnings on the short hop from LHR to BRU, but more by the fact that the longer BRU-HEL JL-coded AY-operated segment displays as zero miles on JAL's website, which seems quite strange. Is it just a bug of the website, or does it reflect the actual mileage calculation?
On a related note, do you know whether the current "400 extra FOPs" promotion only applies to JL-operated flights or also to codeshares?

What I meant was it depends on the BA coded flight's booking class. It is possible to have a different booking class on the BA flight say if that's booked as an add-on or something.
But yes, for JL coded flights, L and H both earn 70% miles and FOPs. But H is upgradable while L is not.
I just did a search on JAL Japan website, it does shows the JL coded AY operated NRT-HEL flights earn some miles. And for FOP bonus purpose, all JL coded flights are treated the same, i.e. JL7071/7070 will earn the 400 FOP bonus as long as it's booked under eligible booking class.

Indeed, in the previous itinerary HEL-NRT does earn miles; it's BRU-HEL that is shown as earning naught. Since it is a flight between two non-Japanese airports, it is not listed in the mileage earning table (https://www.jal.co.jp/jmb/earn/travel/flight/jal5.html); I suppose that is why it is shown as zero on JAL's website at the time of booking. I'm just concerned that it might end up as zero in the actual calculation too. I guess I might ask JAL directly.
And for FOP bonus purpose, all JL coded flights are treated the same, i.e. JL7071/7070 will earn the 400 FOP bonus as long as it's booked under eligible booking class.

Thanks for this. I am actually *A Gold. Is there any big advantage though in going via this option than GK. Obviously we would get lounge access but then we need to change from T2 to T1 while JL and GK both go from T2....

miles, EQMs, lounge access, priority luggage, extra checked luggage allowance, etc. T1 and T2 are just a short bus ride apart. But it's up to you to see whether it worths the hassle (and possibly the extra cost?)

I am afraid JAC flights aren't eligible for Yokoso and JAL Group flights to Yakushima are all operated by JAC.

Applicable to all JL, and NU domestic flights.

I'm currently booked on a AA Business Award Ticket and I have a segment on JAL from BKK to NRT on 9/1. Right now they aren't showing any business availability for JL718 so me and my friend are in Y. That said, the seat map that you see if you were to book a saver paid business ticket looks to have a lot of seats open. Will JAL usually open those seats up for awards closer in to the date?

The flight right now is wide open with C/9 J/9 D/9 X/9 I/0 Y/9 B/9 H/9 K/9 M/9 L/9 V/9 S/8 N/9 Q/0 O/0 G/0
More award seats probably will open up but as you might know there's no guarantee because that's really up to the inventory control. Personally I am not familiar with this route nor the holiday schedule in Thailand. So other FTers probably will have a better educated guess :p
Are you sure you want to travel on Sep 1 though? The seat map is currently showing a regional configured 777-200ER will be used on Sep 1, which means you will get the Skyluxe seats which are the previous generation recliner regional business class seats. They usually use the previous generation long-haul Shell Flat seats on this flight. The flight on Sep 2 right now has award seats available and the seat map is showing the Shell Flat seats will be used.

so i am flying JAL Business class HKG-Tokyo. Corporate policy doesn't allow CX nor NH which I prefer. HKG-Tokyo leg on Haneda (JL28), no complaint there on a 777.
However return i'm concerened. I've been put on NRT flight back to HKG (JL735) however it appears it's using old crappy 767 let alone only available seat is row 5 which is immediately infront of Economy.... Can anyone enlighten me as to quality of their business product? Is this essentially comparable to CX regional Business class? Is this a bad enough product such that I should seriously consider fly on JL29 out of Haneda at a cost of additional PA hotel?
Also how likely is it I get a substitute equipment such as 777 back from NRT to HKG? my flight is on Sep 8th Saturday.
Also has anyone tried to change the flight to a CX-codeshare HND flight JL7039? My secretary tells me it's not possible but I wonder if JL ticketing agent will allow me to sneakly change to a CX flight (my ticket say "Valid on JL only" but i'm not sure if that means JL flight number or JL operated flight)
thanks

Hi,
I don't see anything on the forum about the if different classes and just wanted to ask: what are the different types of premium seats and on what routes are they used?
I know that for F they have the old pods and the new tempurpedic ones.
There are at least two long haul J configs and a bunch of regional ones.
Also if anyone has flown CX F/J can they tell me of the hard/soft product and service in comparison to JL? Thanks.

You can find the seat info on the following pages. If you go to the page for individual seat, you can find the routes that have them at the bottom.
I am extremely biased but I found JAL is superior to CX in F. CX F seat is quite uncomfortable. Yes it's wider but also narrower than the JAL Suite in some way because CX Suite has a triangular shape instead of a rectangular one. In the bed position, it was restricting my legs and quite uncomfortable. The bumps in the bed position also annoyed me quite a bit. I couldn't find a comfortable lounging position with the CX seat either. One of the biggest flaws of the seat is that you couldn't move the seat forward. Unless you have some super long legs, you won't be able to use the ottoman as your foot rest. Also no one-touch button to turn the seat into bed and vice versa. But their massage function is quite nice. I like the sliding table in JAL Suite. You can easily get out of your seat even during meal service and it's way more comfortable with the tempurpedic mattress in the bed position. Also, there were something wrong with the audio wiring with the CX F I was on, there was a constant whining noise in the IFE audio. They only gave you a cheap noise canceling headphones while JAL provides Bose noise canceling headphones in F. But CX probably has better IFE contents if you aren't into Japanese movies.
Soft product wise, I also prefer JAL F. The CAs are way more attentive and more proactive. They will check on you from the galley from time to time. If they found you awake, they will come check on you to see if you need anything, especially if you are reading the menu. That never happened on my CX flight. Also the chatting CX FA were talking quite loudly near L1. It was quite annoying.
But again I am extremely biased so take my opinions with a large grain of salt :D And CX F isn't that bad per se. I wouldn't mind flying that again but if given a choice I would take JL F over CX F on any day. Here's also a thread comparing JL and CX F that you can check out: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/jal-mileage-bank/1084920-jal-cx-first-class.html. There are also people who found CX F is awesome: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/cathay-pacific-asia-miles/1377936-cx-f-awesome.html. So I guess it really depends on your personal preferences when you are comparing two premium carriers at this level.
Also, JAL plans to roll out new seats in all cabin on its long-haul 773 and 763 fleet. So you will get even better seats from next year. You can find more info in this thread: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/jal-mileage-bank/1377758-jal-roll-out-new-seats-long-haul-773-763-jan-2013-a.html

JAL does not play music chairs like CX does with their aircrafts. I am 99.99% sure you will get 763 on JL735. Without knowing your fare rules, I can't comment on whether they will let you fly on the codeshare flight. You need to check your fare rules.
It's only a 5 hour non-redeye flight, Skyluxe (http://www.jal.co.jp/en/inflight/inter/executive/c_seat/index2.html) is perfectly fine and you get full AVOD on JAL regional fleet too. But you don't like getting a non-flat seat for this short flight, you should probably change it to JL029 which gives you the old long-haul product.

I don't care about lie-flat seat but 767 is older aircraft, monitor on skyluxe looks very tiny and seatings seems cramped (2-2-2 vs 2-1-2 for ANA or 2-3-2 on 777). Also going to Narita is a hassle just not my cup of tea (disclaimer i'm Japanese so i know my way around)

Design-wise yes, 767-300ER first entered service in 1988 while 777-200ER first entered service in 1997. But JAL ordered both in 2002 and received their first 767-300ER and 777-200ER on the same date on Nov 27 2000. So JAL's 777-200ER fleet age isn't that much younger than 767-300ER. In fact the 767-300ER fleet might even be younger with all of the recent deliveries :p
Personally I prefer the HND lounge and bigger airplanes more :p Just make sure you don't pick the bulkhead if you don't like tiny screen. :)

Can anyone explain the difference between seats available and vacant seats waiting on the JMB Award Search Engine.
Also, is JL award space on JMB the same with on other OW members like AA, CX?
Per oneworld agreement, the inventory to one's program's general member is the same for the rest of the alliance members' programs.
I am not sure what you were referring to by vacant seats waiting. Did you mean unavailable requiring waitlisting?

The circle from their chart means Seats Available.
The diamond from their chart means Vacant seats waiting.

The only time I heard of JAL renewing people status without the required FOPs is during bankruptcy. I am glad that I haven't encountered the problem of accumulating enough FOPs for renewal yet. But my guess is JAL will probably say rules are rules. But other FTers who have experienced that might have better idea

I am flying J from NRT-BKK connecting from an AA flight from DFW. On AA, they start taking the meal orders at the front of the J cabin on even flight numbers, and at the rear of the cabin on odd flight numbers. Having never flown JAL Business before, does JAL follow a similar system or does it not matter where you sit? I would prefer to get the western meal option.
Also, AA has assigned my wife and I 1H/K on flight 707, however, 2A/C is showing available online, yet AA for some reason shows them as blocked. I called JL and they said only AA can move the seats. The fare code is in I inventory and booked as an AA codeshare. Are there any noticeable issues with sitting in the first row of J on the 767? We want a window/aisle seat next to each other so our options are limited to 1H/K, 2A/C (if AA could put us there) or the last row of Business. If there aren't any noticeable issues with the first row of J on the 767 I won't push the issue.

JAL takes orders from front to back. But they could take all orders and come back to you if they run out of your meal options. They take a couple things into account while choosing who they approach, status is one of the for obvious reasons.
1H/K have reduced legroom according to fumitani who has been on this plane too many times :p JAL blocks seats based on passenger status and fare types. So even if you see them as available, it could still be blocked...but I have no idea if that's the case for you. Were you able to get a JAL PNR and change the seats on JAL website?

I will just leave the seats as is. Even if the seats have slightly less legroom, it still beats Y anyday and I'm sure the service is excellent. I've had difficulties selecting/changing seats on IB flights booked as AA codeshares as well, so its not limited to JL, but still frustrating, however, in the grand scheme of things no that big of a deal.

Flying JAL for the first time tomorrow. DEL-NRT, award ticket via BA Avios. I hold AA Gold status.
Right now, my FFP is fixed as my BA FFP which has no status, thus relegating me to row 53. My questions:
(a) Does AA Gold get me anything, such as access to better Y seats? It'll obviously be at airport check-in that I show my AA Gold card. (I brought the physical card, thinking I might need it for this particular flight.)
(b) Does JL tend to offer day-of-departure upgrades to J or some sort of premium economy product?
(c) Seatguru shows the 787 as having 30 to 32 inch pitch in Y. Any way to tell which are the 30" seats? I assume those would be bright red on Seatguru but they aren't...not much in the way of good and bad seats listed there, other than exit row and one or two seats that are missing a window.
Thanks!

Yes oneworld elites have preferred settings but those seats might have been taken by now.
No discount upgrade and given your ticket is an award issue by BA, I don't think they would even offer non discounted one either
I wasn't aware of the 30 inches pitch. Standard seats have 31.1 inches

From my reading of the rules, I see that awards on partner airlines may not be ticketed within 4 days, or changed within 3 days.
Is this in fact a firm deadline, or would they try to ticket it if there is availability? Anyone have actual experience with this?
I just ask since I've seen such rules on other airlines that weren't strictly kept.
Thanks!

In two months I am flying on a Qantas ticket from SYD-NRT-CTS but when I originally booked there was only one pm JL flight available to CTS.
I now notice there is a flight departing NRT at 10:10 which would be much more convenient than hanging around Naritasan or the airport. (yes, I know I could have flown from HND but I'm a cheapskate).
Is is possible to change to an earlier flight when we re-check at NRT?
If so, is there any charge?

Since this is a Qantas issued ticket, unfortunately you will need to refer to their fare rules. Most likely JAL won't be touching the reservation and any reservation change has to go through Qantas but then I don't have first hand experience on this.

And... is there a chance of requesting an american meal, like meat accompanied with vegetables and that kind of stuff? I'm not very familiar with japanese or asian food yet :S
Thanks in advance!

I assume you are ticketed in Y since there is no exit row seats in C. What kind of booking class are you ticketed in? Some tickets are not eligible for advanced seat selection and therefore will affect your chances of getting the exit row seats. But as a ow ruby, you should be able to select some of the exit row seats in advanced as long as you have an eligible ticket.
Unfortunately there is no meal reservation in Y (nor C for that matter) unless you opt for the special meal. But on ex-BOS flight, the first meal will have both Western and Japanese option and a pasta dish is usually served pre-arrival. On ex-NRT though, you the 2nd meal is usually a Japanese dish from the Air Series. It could be either Japanese or Western and we won't know what it is until late Feb because they change it every 3 months.

I redeemed an award ticket on JAL using an AA miles, so this is "T" class for them, and it's the only leg I'm flying JAL, NRT-BOS, on my return to the US, for which they could select a nice window seat for me, but the exit row seats seem to be blocked... anyway... can't wait to be on that 787!
by the way, you have a great blog about JAL, very complete!

Yes your ticket is eligible for advanced seat selection. But as I pointed out, there are exit row seats that you aren't eligible to select and are reserved for high tier status members. If you can't select an exit row seat on JAL website, that means the ones you are eligible for have already been taken. Your only chance for the other exit row seats are at the airport if they haven't been taken already.

Hello all,
Just ticketed a couple of AA award J seats on JL NRT to ORD for February travels. Unfortunately we will be in Y from BKK to NRT, while awaiting - more like hoping - J seats will be available to award travel. As far as AA is concerned, the entire trip is in J class.
At NRT, I believe we will have access to the Sakura Lounge. What about at BKK? Can I barge into the Biz Lounge showing my onward J tickets or will the dragons deny me entry? Thoughts?
Oh, and 11 A & C on JL 10. Nothing bad about those seats, right?
Thanks!

Unfortunately I don't think you will be allowed to use the Sakura Lounge at BKK.
There could be a missing window in row 11

I will be flying from BKK to HND on JAL then from NRT to DFW on AA. Our layover time in Japan is 4:30, does this give us enough time to make the transfer from HND to NRT?
My big concern is that we will be traveling with a 18 month old baby and all of the extra gear that he needs.

You should be fine. If you take the bus it takes about 70-90 minutes (traffic depending), however with an infant you may want to take the NEX Express. Take the Monorail to Hamamatsucho and get the NEX express, or take the subway to Shinagawa and get the NEX there. Make sure to check the timetables of the NEX before departure tho to make sure it lines up.

Not sure which forum is best to put this in, but I'll be flying an RTW DONE5 soon and am wondering about whether to just stick to my existing JAL mileage card or get something else (AA? Qantas?) for the trip. The RTW has no JAL flights, but will give me over 40000 miles. If I understand the rules correctly, this would not get me any status with JAL, which would be a shame. Is that correct?
If that's the case, I'll probably consider either AA or QF plans as I think I can qualify for the lowest level on either.

You will need to earn at least half of the elite qualifying points (FOPs) on JAL metal, so it is correct you won't get any status even if you credit everything to your JMB account.
For AA, you will need to fly 4 AA flights in order to qualify. Not sure about QF, you can check with folks on the QF forum :)

I am taking my family to Japan in late March 2013. I have a fair number of AA miles that can more than cover awards. I've put a couple of AA awards out of ORD then back to JFK on hold with AA, both in F (4 seats). However I have not pulled the trigger as I really would love to experience JAL.
Our dates are somewhat flexible: We leave on 3/21 or 3/22, return anytime from 3/30 through 4/1. Availability is light this close in, but I figure give it a try. Right now I have 2 seats in F on hold on 3/30 NRT-ORD. I would need either 2 more in F or 2 in biz - or nearby dates. I would be happy with either an outbound or return, no need for both (unless there was some miracle of availability). Ideally the return would be to either ORD of JFK as it is easiest to get back home to CLE.
Any help or insight as to whether or not I have much of a chance would be very much appreciated.
Thank you,
SI

Sorry I am busy packing for my flight in less than 6 hours so didn't look at the particular flights. No one can predict inventory but you can take a look at the seat map to guess how full the flight is. But bear in mind quite a few of the premium passengers just don't bother to preassign seats though.

Word on the street is you are coming to my neck of the woods again. My flame free question is...... why bother flying JL now that NH is so much better FF program? Why would anyone ex USA want to fly JL over NH given all the benefits of flying NH? I just am trying to understand how someone would want to do this. Help me understand this insanity.
Does it have anything to do with gaining those turtle tags? I know they look sexy but you can buy them cheap on Rakuten auction and fly NH instead!

Did anyone hear of someone doing the Malev status match?
I didn't act on this when Malev went bust, but I have a Malev card and are now contemplating it. It is open until new years. But the matched status seems only valid until 31 march next year, and then it makes not much sense of looking into it now.

Yeah a couple of people did. You will not get status extended past 31st of March next year. Their system will say no so don't bother asking so basically doesn't matter when you match prior to the deadline as the expire date remains the same but i would get onto it sooner rather than later.

Has anyone had any experience using this service? (http://www.jal.co.jp/inter/service/tebura/) Seems like it gets your bags straight from where you're staying over to the arrival airport for a fee, but I have no idea of the specifics, like how much it costs, how soon pick-up has to be arranged, and whether everything would be waiting for me at baggage claim on arrival like normally checked bags or if they just guarantee delivery to the destination airport, not necessarily on the same flight I'm on.

hello
i started doing volunteer work in se asia xmas '08 and have been there a total of 6 times, flew JAL the first 3 times in xmas '08 and 2 x in '09. was a supersaver so only got 1/2 miles about 30,000, wow...what a pleasure!!!, always smiling and friendly. then the JAL prices increased so i used sucky DELTA( now the only one who allows 1 free checked bag) btw i have 50,000 miles on delta. My JAL about 30,000 miles were wiped to ZERO!! not very nice since i loved them. Also delta sucks and seems to be the only airline that charges 120,000 miles jfk to bkk.
Im getting ready to book my trip in 2 days... please give me any of your expert advice and suggestions on how to go about getting maximun value from my approx. 2 trips a year from jfk to bkk. What exactly does using the same alliance do for you? I dont get cars or hotels.. so all i care about is the flights.
Is there any way to get my 30,000 JAL miles back?? I always pay between
$1150 and $1450 for a r/t . Im thinking about using Emirates. Sorry so much to read, i appreciate you taking the time to help me out, point me in the right direction!!

Greetings! My first post here in FlyerTalk Forums.
I have a question regarding JMB which I just registered last week. Since Qantas is a member of Oneworld and so does it's affiliate Jetstar (please correct me), can I earn miles in my JMB account if I fly with Jetstar on certain types of fare? Or is it only applicable to Qantas' FFP only? I am also flying with CX this Jan 10, can the miles on the route be guaranteed to be earned on my JMB account since Cathay is member of Oneworld also and I am not that interested in Asia Miles.

Welcome to the JAL forum and FT, flyingJAPman!
Unfortunately Jetstar is not part of oneworld. You will need to credit your Jetstar flights to QF program to earn miles.
It is also not guaranteed to earn JMB miles on other oneworld members' flights. You will need to refer to the program rules to be sure. Below is the page for JMB rules on CX flights.

The 2 first class award tickets on JAL for NRT-LAX in mid-June that I've been eyeing are now down to 1 award ticket, which doesn't work for our plans. What are the chances that it will go back to 2 first class tickets anytime soon? I'm using AA miles, so I'm trying to figure out whether I should just book AA first class NRT-LAX now while there are still seats available, or if I should hold out in the hopes that more JAL inventory will appear. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks!

It is hard to predict especially there are only 8 seats in JAL F. I would take AA F seats now and monitor the JAL inventory. I believe AA award allows carrier change right? At least you get to fly in F for sure this way.

Hi. New to JAL and planning a trip which includes segment ICN-NRT. Can't decide if it's worth buying a J ticket or stick in Y - can anyone tell me what product they use on the 767 - is it a european type business class where it's effectively just economy with extra space or a bit more than that?

Not european style business class. JAL uses recliners, i.e. Skyrecliner and Skyluxe on 767.

As a business class passenger/AA plat, you are entitled to any oneworld business class lounge at NRT as long as your connecting flight is operated by an oneworld carrier. In general, in terms of food, drinks and service, Sakura Lounge is the best option given it is JAL's home base but could get crowded during peak hours. And there are multiple Sakura Lounges too and I usually stick to the one in the Main Building. You might want to check out the AC too if you want some quiet time. Below is an excellent thread about different options at NRT.
We're flying NRT-LAX first class for the first time this summer. We've never been in anything but coach, so we're definitely excited! But since we're newbies, what are some things we should know about flying first class?
1. What do people usually wear in first class? I wouldn't want to show up in a suit while everyone's in shorts and flip flops, or vice versa.
2. Is the alcohol free and unlimited?
3. Is the food unlimited? For example, could I ask for a second helping of dessert or two different appetizers, or would that be totally crass?
Any other tips, protocols, or potential faux pas we should be aware of?

Just wear something decent and comfortable. After you board, you will be presented with your PJ and most people wear that throughout the flight. On my flight I had seen people wear shorts and suits.
Yes, alcohol is free and "unlimited" until it runs out.
You can order whatever you want until it runs out too. There's an a la carte menu which JAL will start serving after the first meal service and you can order as often and as much as you want. But for the items on the first meal menu, personally I would let the crew have a chance to have their meals before ordering another round :p

Unfortunately you would have to either call JAL Korea or use an online travel agency for this.
There's a way to book that on the Japanese site but it will only book you in normal fare.
If you have BA miles, you might want to consider doing an one-way redemption too.

If so are blocked seats available to other One World Emerald by calling JAL?
I would like to be able to get two window seats on the same side of the aircraft if possible.

JAL also blocks seats based on fare types. Unless something has changed, you won't be able to select 1A even if you call JAL when you are on an award ticket for example.
But the good news is SS7 will most likely be rolled out on this route from November 2014 and you will be able to enjoyed the New JAL Suite.

There are other ways through newspaper subscriptions, long distance service subscriptions, etc

Other loyalty programs such as SPG allows transfer to JMB miles too.

Konbanwa everyone - would really appreciate some help to navigate the JAL website (and I thought BA's website was 'challenging'!).
I could not find any way to book a Yokoso fare online (well actually I did, but only once you get to the small print, you find out it's only for North Americans).
So I phoned JAL, and booked HND-ISG-HND. I now have a pdf confirmation and a six-letter PNR.
How do I log in to Manage My Booking? I see two options for logging in - one requires a 4 digit confirmation number (I don't have one, I have six letters). The other takes six letters, but will only let you put in JL flight numbers (my flight is operated by JTA), and doesn't recognise my booking. Checkmytrip doesn't recognise my booking.
So what's the secret? :)
I just want to log in to check everything is okay, to add my BA FFP number, choose seats (can you?) and familiarise myself with where OLCI is, as JAL is not an airline I have used before.
I'm also finding it quite hard to find information about the service I should expect - is there a meal service? If so, is it just a Japanese option only on this flight? I hope so - I don't want to go all the way to Japan to eat western food!

Last time I was told there's a incompatibility and you wouldn't be able to retrieve your Yokoso ticket online. And there's no corresponding 4-digit PNR for your booking either. JAL was aware of the issue and would work on a solution.
In case the problem has been fix, you would need to visit the foreign regional site to retrieve your booking. Go to http://www.uk.jal.com/ukl/en/ and it should take your PNR.
There's no OLCI for Yokoso ticket and you have to do that on the day of travel. Seat selection only opens up T - 2.5 months for this kind of ticket and you would need to call JAL to do the seat selection if you can't access your booking online.
There's no meal service on this flight. But there's beer for sale and if you are flying on JL076, there's snack for sale: http://www.churashima.net/jta/shopping/img/kinai_keishoku.pdf
If you read Japanese, you can find out more on the JTA website: http://www.jal.co.jp/jta/
Have a pleasant flight.

Do BA Coded JAL Flights count under the "JAL Group Flights" requirement for JMB Status? It works the other way around, but I'm not sure...

Unfortunately no. Only JAL coded flights are counted towards the JAL Group flights for JMB status purpose. For example,
JL7080 operated by BA --> JAL Group flight
BA4602 operated by JL --> non-JAL Group flight

Thought I would give an update...
On arrival I asked at the domestic check-in desk but as you thought JAL were unable to change my flight to an earlier one. They suggested I ask at the QF service desk but advised us there would be a change fee.
So, we just decided to stick to the original booking. We upgraded to a business class seat, checked in our bags, visited the Sakura Lounge to freshen up and have breakfast, then caught the bus to Aeon Mall to do some shopping.
It all worked out well and the time flew! So did our 17 days in Japan:D

Looking at http://www.jal.co.jp/en/aircraft/conf/767.html
it seems to indicate that international config of B767 is Skylux seat while domestic config is J-class seat.
Are the two configs used strictly domestic/international, or does domestic config appear on "regional" flights?
I am specifically looking at a flight to Taiwan, which time and distance wise is pretty much like a domestic flight.
(and I read another thread that seemed to suggest NRT-BKK was domestic config B767)
And if J-class appears on international flights, is the "upgrade to J-class for 1000円 offer" linked to the existence of J-class config or is it strictly domestic?

767s to Taipei have Skyluxe. TSA flights may have Skyrecliner.
Upgrades to Class J are domestic only and I do not believe any aircraft with Class J would be operated internationally. Even if it did, it would be operated as Business Class (not Class J) thus would not qualify for a 1000-yen upgrade.

They will be operated as Y not C. This happened to some flights to Seoul during the 787 grounding

Interesting, so it was single-class? Or did they use domestic 772s with F and operate that as C?

I understand it was an exceptional case with the 787 grounding, but buying a C-fare on 787 and at flying get 767 J must be a bit disappointing, I guess. yamanote8's suggestion would seem more logical, but it all comes down to what metal they had available.

Purely out of curiosity, what happened to passengers ticketed in C?

Going by the seat map it certainly seems that way.
You could try the JAL Flight Schedule page to check for sure: http://www.jal.co.jp/en/inter/skdl/

So next year I will probably find myself living in Japan, I'm thinking of bringing my old JMB card out of the dust and switching to oneworld from *A, but I have no idea what I'm doing.
I will be flying between TYO-SFO-NYC/TYO-NYC at most 2 or 3 times a year, and would like to make it to JGC.
What's the minimum amount I'd have to do to qualify? The most practical I could figure out would have been:
1x JFK-NRT on JL +7000 FLY-ON
1x NRT-JFK R/T on JL +14000
2x HND-SFO R/T on JL +20000
2x SFO-JFK R/T on AA +10000
Total 51000 (EDIT: with the bulk of it on JL so that should clear the 25K portion)
Assuming the tab for HND-SFO is picked up by work as well as the first flight, this would end up costing about $1200 for the 2xSFO-JFK trips, and an another $2500 for the one NRT-JFK R/T in PY.
Alternatively, does it make sense to try mileage runs within Japan?

Just wear something decent and comfortable. After you board, you will be presented with your PJ and most people wear that throughout the flight. On my flight I had seen people wear shorts and suits.
Yes, alcohol is free and "unlimited" until it runs out.
You can order whatever you want until it runs out too. There's an a la carte menu which JAL will start serving after the first meal service and you can order as often and as much as you want. But for the items on the first meal menu, personally I would let the crew have a chance to have their meals before ordering another round :p
Thanks, JALPak! What about check-in or pre-boarding? Are there any differences there if I'm flying F versus economy? Is there a special check-in line? Are there any perks that I should make sure to take advantage of? I'm assuming that I'll have access to the JAL first class lounge at NRT. Anything else I should know?
Thanks so much!

Is it me or is it weird that when you get an award ticket that includes a TPAC segment in C or F, that a connecting domestic leg is in Y? I always buy C and my connections are all up front while my wife who has been getting award tix lately has to sit in the back from NRT to NGO and back. Don't most US and European airlines let you sit up front for all segments?

Is there any cheaper way to getting to JGC with the routes that I fly? I see that the AA earn chart has taken quite the hit.
I see there are JAL routes between HND and ITM that might be of interest in case I want to pop over to Osaka -- class J at about 25000円. Do those earn 400 FOP each way, or is it just 400 total? That would net a total of 1200 FOP.
The difference between SFO-NYC on AA in K as opposed to S is $600, with only a 20% difference in FOP (50% to 70% -- so a drop of about 2.4K miles). If the above is correct, by not caring about the fare class between SFO and NYC, I could net myself two trips to Osaka and still come out even. :p
--
Then there's the bigger question -- if I were to fly the same amount every year, would it make more sense to credit to AAdvantage instead of JMB? Or perhaps even UA? Considering I'm really only flying between Japan and the US, and within the US and Japan, I'm not sure which of the three to pursue.
I'd rather not have to re-qualify for status every year, but AA seems easier to get with the routes that I fly, and JL on HND-SFO is much cheaper in PY than it is on NH (and I have no clue why).
(Please be gentle, I know I may have crossed some line by mentioning UA :D)

Is there a manage my booking section on the JAL website where I can add my BA exec club number, or would I be best phoning JAL.

Thanks,
The helpful JAL call centre staff in London sorted it in 90 seconds.
As a follow up, what fare class do the Yokoso tickets book in to.
The e-ticket receipt I was emailed shows class as Y which I expected, but no details of the fare class within.

I've just taken to paying the 1000 yen (actually lower because they don't charge tax if you came off an int'l or are boarding an int'l flight after) when possible.

I am looking at JL772 SYD-NRT on 5 October on J for 2 plus 1 in lap infant using AA miles. I have never travelled JL before. Can you please confirm that:
- There are really no F in JL772? Is it usually an old bird flying on this route? What kind of seat am I expecting? Would I get the Sky Suite?
- Should I expect much in regard to JL service/food/IFE, compare to OZ J, SQ J, TG J, NZ J etc? Or should I keep this low?
- I assume that JL J uses QF lounge in SYD, right?
- Once ticketed, would I be able to call up JL to select seat? I want to get one for bassinet.
