Air New Zealand Air Points - Straight Up Fares
Grabaseat has just anounced the introduction of Straight Up Fares, just in time for April 1st:

The seat map is a riot.

What a great buy, I've booked a couple of them, I'm just wondering if they'll earn status points as well. :)
Should do - but it really gives a whole new meaning to the term "mileage run".

Looks like Ryanair's future plans!
Looks like Ryanair's future plans!
That's why it fell flat to me -- because this has been hypothesized about as a real product and I'm sure I've seen it as an April Fool's joke elsewhere.
I am a tad grumpy today (fresh off a long haul flight) but this just struck me as another example of how out of touch NZ is with actually being creative and using marketing effectively.
Yes - I realize it's meant as an April Fool joke.

Great idea. But is the straight up basic too dense?

I wonder if you can use OneUp to bid for a seat if you select a straightup fare.

Something similar was definitely floated by Ryanair some time ago. It wasn't an April Fool's joke but, I think, just another Ryanair way of getting its name in the news.
Another idea of theirs was to charge people for using toilets in flight.
So, although it's good to see NZ taking part in April Fool's Day I didn't laugh that much as I'd heard it before.

I still don't think its appropriate for an airline to make jokes in more or less of an official capacity. Should people claim the ad is misleading and get Commerce Commission to look at it?

You say joke but look at feedback on this site - is it a joke, is it for real and just gauging peoples opinions. I believe that the only way to stop this latest nonsense is for everyone to say it is agreat idea and demand immediate release of the system and allow APD earning - that way NZ (going on recent developments) will can the idea, bring out seat only fares with extras for cushions and blankets and introduce vending machines for snacks :)
The wife woke up yesterday morning a tad hungover after a friends wedding, she read the email on her phone and started going on about "I wonder what it'd be like"
I felt bad for her and had to let her down gently about the date.
