New York City - Recommend a budget hotel with easy access to subway

Please recommend a budget hotel with easy access to subway. I will have to walk or if the hotel provides a shuttle to the nearest subway station on a daily basis though.
I will be staying for a week and mainly doing sight seeing and taking photos. I'll be on a 7-day subway card for the entire trip, no car rental.
I assume the rates will be better if I stay away from the upper scale spots like times square, etc. An extra 15 minutes travel on the subway or an extra 1-2 transfers is not a problem to save some money.
My main priority is price and ease of getting around. Most of the time I like to just be walking around and sight seeing, so besides sleeping, the less time I spend at the hotel, the better.
HI-E tends to be the chain I prefer: breakfast is hot and decent enough to get me started and most important rates are low to mid-priced. I don't need the frills of designer beds, in-hotel big name chef restaurants, or multi-comfort pillows.

Rates can vary significantly by week, so it would help to know when you're going, and what you mean by "budget".
The good news is that any "budget" hotel is likely to be within a 10 minute walk (or less) of the Subway, as the Subway is pretty ubiquitous

There are subway stops everywhere. Here's the subway map: http://www.mta.info/nyct/maps/submap.htm You've got to do your own homework.
- Quality Inn Jamaica Airtrain (2 minute walk to the Jamaica/Parsons-Archer Station
- Comfort Inn Long Island City (2 minute walk to the Queensboro Plaza Station)
- Ramada Jamaica (5 minute walk to the 169th Street Station)
I've stayed at all three and they're all fine or better and usually pretty reasonably priced.

There's a Holiday Inn in Long Island City, Queens, which is just over the East River from Manhattan and has a whole bunch of subway lines running through it:

Also, if you want something cheaper, there are a bunch of other properties (Comfort Inn, Best Western, etc.) in the same general vicinity.

I'm going mid-May. May 15-22.

As far as budget goes, I was trying to keep it below $150. There's actually a deal on hotwire for ~$80 after fees for what is most likely the LGA Airport Hotel. Looks like if I went that route, I would have to take their shuttle to LGA, then bus to get to the subway each morning. Plus they offer at least some coffee and doughnuts for breakfast.
That Quality Inn Jamaica looks comparable to that rate, add in that they usually have a hot breakfast, and much easier to get to subway station than the LGA airport.
Thanks for these suggestions so far, it looks like it has already pointed me in the right direction.
There's also a HI-Express at Queens Maspeth for a good rate and I have priority club points, looks like the nearest station is woodside station and they have a complimentary shuttle to/from station.

Woodside is LIRR. Runs less frequently, costs more $$. Take that into consideration before you move beyond the regular MTA routes.

Well, the #7 subway stops right by the Woodside LIRR station too. Still, I'd avoid having to rely on a hotel shuttle if ease of getting around is a priority.
The Long Island City area is where I'd be looking, if anything there is within budget.
