I have a layover in FCO on Saturday for a couple of hours.
I have priority pass and would normally use their lounges, but I'll be flying in and out of Terminal 1 with Alitalia, and the PP lounges are a bit trek to get to.
In reading the Alitalia website, I can buy lounge passes for 25€ (about what PP would charge me for entrance)
A couple of questions: are lounge passes valid for 1 entry or a day, for instance if I buy a pass in MAD, can I access a lounge in MAD and then in FCO as well?
Is it possible to buy the lounge pass directly in the lounge or do I need to have already purchased it before going airside?
Also how are the Alitalia lounges in Terminal 1, is it worth it, or is there enough to do in the terminal.
Thanks for any suggestions!

This might have changed, but when I was there at the beginning of the month the only AZ lounge that was open was the one above the "D" Gates, which might still be a bit of a walk!
It also wasn't that spectacular - serviced bar, but very limited snacks, and you need an Italian cell phone number to receive the code for the WiFi. No way would I pay 25€ for it unless I had a very very long layover.
Given that, if there are other lounges open, they might be better options. I'm sure someone else will chime in.

I would agree that AZ lounges could be improved. Personally, I don't like serviced bars in lounges (I can pour my own drinks!) and the food offering is quite limited.

Hmmm. It may say that you need an Italian cell phone number to get the code, but I don't have an Italian number, and I've definitely managed to get online (using one of my other European cell numbers to receive the code).

I wouldn't pay for the lounge. You can get the wi-fi by sitting outside gate D2 anyway, although the SMS takes a while to arrive sometimes.

Aeree on all bus you get the wifi code also on a non Italian cell phone, unfortunately the SMS receiving time is for slow due to the provider.

Good to know! I have an Italian #, so it was fine, but I didn't realize it would work with others as well.

The lounge at B gates is still closed, so yes, bit of a trek. The lounge at D gates is in front of the priority pass one IIRC.
The snacks are not bad, actually, not any worse than the ones in the priority pass lounge IIRC (but I've been there just once).

I was in Rome during the early-February snowstorms. Due to weather delays, my flight was delayed by 3 hours....which meant plenty of lounge time. Upon check-in, I was informed of the "Bramante" lounge which is located in Terminal 1, check-in counter area...before security. I passed that up, wanting to get air-side. I was told the only open lounge in the schengen area was the Borromini Lounge near the D boarding area...so I went there.
It's a rather drab, dreary and unkempt lounge. There was an attendant at the bar, but I prefer to pour my own drinks, thank you. Snacks included chips and cookies...there were also salami sandwiches on foccacia bread, that's all.
Regarding wi-fi, the attendant simply pointed to the pamphlets which were supposed to contain detailed instructions on how to access service. If you're an AZ lounge member, you apparently have an ongoing access code, but for the newcomer, you have to sign up via a long, confusing process...which involves paying .30 EUR cents....and they send you an access code via email. OR you can have that code sent to your cell phone. But I'm old skool and don't have INTL cell service. JOY!!
Since my flight was departing from the B boarding area, it was a LONG walk to this particular lounge. There were great views of the tarmac, if you like that sorta thing.
It wasn't particularly crowded, which was nice.
I have two upcoming trips scheduled on AZ...I hope to take advantage of the Sky Priority services!
Question: As a DL SM member, is there preferred seating on AZ flights?

I find it airy, full of light, and quite comfortable. And most people in the world would regard "barman service" as superior to "do it yourself" ;-)
There's sandwiches of various types, which is just as good as most Skyteam lounges get.

No, you just get your password via SMS, like anybody else.
Question: As a DL SM member, is there preferred seating on AZ flights?
No. There's comfort seating (exit rows) but it's reserved to AZ's own elite, or you can pay for it.

YMMV - I've received comfort seating before, but you won't get anywhere by asking for it specifically.

I will say that the bar staff makes an excellent cappuccino, but the food selection is definitely not "just as good". I guess it depends on where else you fly, but I would say that for an airline's hub lounge, the bagged chips and three types of mini sandwiches are definitely not comparable.

Would you prefer to compare it with DL's hub in ATL? ;-)

Does anyone know what terminal I'll be departing from, so I can evaluate my club options?

My wife and her mother will be flying Alitalia Business class YYZ-FCO-IKA and will have a 13 hrs stopover at FCO. I believe they will be arriving and departing from Terminal 3.
Need some assistance about what lounges they have access to and how good they are. My wife also has a Priority Pass card if needed for a better lounge.
Would it be better to get a hotel? Are there any airport hotels that offer "Day rate" at FCO? They are arriving 7 AM and departing 9 PM.
Thanks.

Unfortunately, my mother-in-law isn't too mobile, so tour of Rome won't be a possibility. I was hoping for a good lounge or a day room at an airport hotel. Last time I did this trip, the connection was via MXP and the lounge we had access to was good. However, we have never been through FCO for this long of a connection.

The Hilton has day rooms (I think about €99). This may or may not work well for you as they are fixed hours (I think it is from 10am to 6pm or something like that). This is not a great hotel but will certainly be better than lounges which will feel infuriating after 2 or 3 hours! If transfer is within T3, the AZ lounge is in the satellite and so is the priority pass. Both are 'blind' lounges with no natural light, food is minimal, coffee ok, a few lounger chairs but lounge is often fairly full and thus mechanically have its share of loud people depending on which flights are departing.

Thx ORBITMIC - I will call the Hilton and see if I can book a day room.

Just a quick update... Hilton Airport charges 130 euros for a day room (standard) and 165 euros for a Club Level room.

My parents are flying business class LAX-FCO, then have a 4 hour layover before flying FCO-BCN. I'm assuming they will arrive in T3, have to clear immigration, and then will exit out of the secure area. Looks like they'll depart out of T1, so they they'd have to go through security again.
Any suggestions on the most convenient lounge for them to access? It'd be great if there was one with showers. If not, then I think I'd just want to tell them the easiest one to get to (or closest to their FCO-BCN departure), and not necessarily the nicest one. I don't think they will want to go out of their way to another terminal just to get a better lounge (unless it has showers).

There aren't really any Terminals at FCO, the T's are just names given to different areas of the airport. Arriving at T3 your parents will have a security check immediately after getting off the plane, followed by a passport check which will take them straight into the T1/T2 area. A good (the only) lounge there is above the D-gates, "Borromini" with showers available, and not crowded.
Funny to route BCN via FCO - to try out the new business class?

Sort of. It's an award using Delta miles i booked for them. Initially I had them on some crazy routing, just to get a low level award (SFO-MSP-ORD-CDG-BCN). I was very happy to later find SFO-LAX-FCO-BCN which is on a much better business class product and has less time on domestic first/business seats.

A related question: I will have a long (10 hours and 5 minutes, to be precise) connection at FCO. The plan is to spen the afternoon in Rome. Can I check all my luggage (perhaps except valuable stuff), so that I don't have to carry it, or there is some rule about checking in luggage in the case of long connections? could not find anything on AZ website.

You can check your luggage even on a long connection. I don't think there's a left luggage option in FCO.
