Starwood Preferred Guest - merge old account with new one and lifetime

Just wondering if any of you have experience with merging accounts.
years ago I had an account I let it lapse for a few years then went to re establish it and was told by the res agent to just open a new one which i dod. now with the lifetime I checked to see that I was almost lifetime gold with 240 nights.
I got them to merge accounts and now I have only 180
how can that be?

can they not count or are they just pulling numbers out of the air?
I think the latter
be careful to get pdfs of your accounts before merging!
