Jet Airways (9W) announced today that they will run promotion for their JetPrivilege members until Sep 30 2012 (travel until that day) - 20% less miles required.
I have checked few different routes and these discounts are already in the system. I think this is really good deal for these, who collect miles on 9W.
More details here http://www.jetairways.com/Newsletter/Html/WBJPUpd_JtKnctJP_PRW_Mar12.html
And Jet does it again. Just when it looks like they throw us a bone they take it away... so the 20% discount was showing for all flights online albeit with very limited availability. Now, just as I see flights for dates I want I get a quote of the 94000 miles for EWR-BRU-MAA, vs the 75,200 I was getting yesterday. Call the JPSC and I am told that the discount is only on domestic flights not international. So the lucky ones who got away making redemptions on those flights - congrats... JP is becoming more and more of a joke of a loyalty program.

I honestly think that Gaurang Shetty, Rahul Kucheria and the people in charge of JP are a bunch of egotistical dinosaurs. When they were asked by a senior airport manager as to why they keep getting so many complaints for passengers about JP redemptions, Shetty replied that 9W Revenue management is as sophisticated and based on the same model as British Airways. As a GGL with BA for 3 years and someone who has earned over 2.5 million miles with them (currently 1.5million in the bank), I can assure 9W that they are so far from the truth with that it’s not even funny. Up until now 9W had an excellent onboard product that partially made up for the awful JP program. However with service cutbacks getting worse by the minute – I am opting yet again to move elsewhere with my international business and let them enjoy their full service domestic monopoly…

they pretty much do....its evident in the fares they are charging in business class....they are 50% more than what you would get on ai....the reason behind this is that an average business traveler will not buy a business class ticket on ai....most of the people you see in business class on ai are either government officials or people who have received some sort of an upgrade....all the paying business class passenger are on 9w these days....

that's just the way it is....my firm, as well as all the other firms i know, have a policy about only flying jet & kingfisher....ai is only to be taken if either one of these airlines are not available, no matter what the price....

just got off a domestic business class flight on ai....here are some observations:
the flight was delayed by 20 minutes & was showing up on the screen but when i asked the check-in agent if the flight was on time then she said it was....
while checking in there were 2 people checking in at the counter next to me....one indian & another foreigner....the indian kept singing praises to the other about how great ai is & how underrated it is....he went as far as to say that ai was the best airline in the world....pvdtodel, that wasn't you by any chance was it????:p
ai is using the cafe coffee day as a lounge & the buffet spread is one of the worst i have ever seen in my life....food was bad, hot items were warm & cold items were warm as well....
no one came by to announce boarding so when there were 20 minutes left i proceeded to the gate myself....while walking to the gate there was a final boarding announcement for my flight....when i got to the gate it turned out that they would not be boarding for another 20 minutes....
boarding went well....they boarded the business class & wheelchair passengers first....
i got to my regular 2c seat & my foot rest was not working properly....it was too loose so it wouldn't stay in one position....the moment i put my leg on it, it would fall back on the ground....i guess i should consider myself lucky since my fellow passenger didn't even have a foot rest at his seat....
the seat in front of me was being held together with the help of duct tape....
i was offered juice before takeoff which was chilled & well presented....
the food service was very good & the food was very tasty....this is one area where i always praise ai....the presentation was also good....it was not brought out in individual portions but served buffet style....
rest of the flight was uneventful....
i will however point out that there were about 8 passengers in business class....besides me & another passenger, i don't think any of the others payed for their business class tickets....looks can be deceiving but about 3-4 looked like government officials either flying for free or having got a free upgrade....i heard the 2 ladies sitting behind me tell the air hostess how their husbands work for ai & how they always get to fly in business class for free....
the only reason i took this flight is because my kingfisher flight kept getting delayed & i didn't want to risk it getting cancelled....the next available flight was ai....
so once again, i definitely think, at the moment, jet has a monopoly as the sole full service carrier....kingfisher is too unreliable at the moment & ai does not have paying passengers in business to challenge jet....

Food is one area, AI is consistent recently, the credit should go to the caterer and the F&B Manager. I still remember a IC Flight taken 2-3 years back with a Stale, almost gone bad samosa as a snack, when pointed out to the FA, got a
But off 10+ flights taken in last year by wife, she still remembers the food served in a AI flight. (FWIW, worst being KF)

just got off a domestic business class flight on ai....here are some observations: observations are good! If you are going to be making observations, you might want to forward them to AI as well - after all, they are the ones who can do something about it, not me...
the flight was delayed by 20 minutes & was showing up on the screen but when i asked the check-in agent if the flight was on time then she said it was.... It's India. 20 minutes late is on time :p
That said, it always annoys me when employees give me misinformation like that. I'm not a fan :td:

No, it wasn't me. I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one though :p. Next time this happens to you, take his card and forward it to me. It's not every day that I find other people who like AI... ;)
ai is using the cafe coffee day as a lounge & the buffet spread is one of the worst i have ever seen in my life....food was bad, hot items were warm & cold items were warm as well.... That's terrible. If I were in your place, I would probably be tempted to be a real FTer and drag over the station manager to demand compensation ;)
As unsatisfactory as this is, at least you could look forward to real food on board :)
no one came by to announce boarding so when there were 20 minutes left i proceeded to the gate myself....while walking to the gate there was a final boarding announcement for my flight....when i got to the gate it turned out that they would not be boarding for another 20 minutes....
Yeah, that's happened to me many times. Interestingly enough, it's more common on SG than AI - their Q400 operation's on-time rates seem to be dependent on getting the entire flight standing by the counter ready to go 15 minutes before boarding commences. Followed by sitting on the bus for 10 minutes without going anywhere of course :)
boarding went well....they boarded the business class & wheelchair passengers first.... If you boarded first, how do you know that boarding went well?
i got to my regular 2c seat & my foot rest was not working properly....it was too loose so it wouldn't stay in one position....the moment i put my leg on it, it would fall back on the ground....i guess i should consider myself lucky since my fellow passenger didn't even have a foot rest at his seat....

What kind? Have they stopped serving the pineapple juice? That stuff was good.
the food service was very good & the food was very tasty....this is one area where i always praise ai....the presentation was also good....it was not brought out in individual portions but served buffet style....
If only the rest of the flight was this good, I wouldn't need to argue so much to convince everyone else that AI is good.
i will however point out that there were about 8 passengers in business class....besides me & another passenger, i don't think any of the others payed for their business class tickets....looks can be deceiving but about 3-4 looked like government officials either flying for free or having got a free upgrade.... That's why their decision to make the J cabin smaller was a good one. At least people are paying for the Y seats.
i heard the 2 ladies sitting behind me tell the air hostess how their husbands work for ai & how they always get to fly in business class for free.... Presumably, they are married to people in management. Perhaps those people should be willing to take a cut in this (wholly unnecessary) benifit so that AI can afford to pay their pilots, FAs, CSRs, etc. on time?
the only reason i took this flight is because my kingfisher flight kept getting delayed & i didn't want to risk it getting cancelled....the next available flight was ai.... You booked IT over AI?:eek:
so once again, i definitely think, at the moment, jet has a monopoly as the sole full service carrier....kingfisher is too unreliable at the moment & ai does not have paying passengers in business to challenge jet....
I guess I see your point. However, your point is akin to saying that AI has a monopoly in the FSC market because they are the only FSC which I fly in India. Whether people are flying them or not is irrelevant - the very existence of AI as an FSC means that there is no monopoly.

It was the first time I had ever been served food on the short IXE-BLR hop, and I was in a bit of shock... I thought the food was absolutely fantastic. I can think of many AI meals which were good, but they were all missing that "shock" aspect that made the IT meal taste so good.

Indeed!
One thing that JP has taught me as that it can only ever be my third FFP carrier. I have been BA Gold and LH SEN for over a decade and both of those are still way more valuable.
The 9W Plat status that I have held for the last 3/4 years is just not worth the hassle to earn and I certainly won't go out of my way to renew it. The cuts in service onboard in J are bad enough, but the worsening ground handling and poor lounges even at hubs as well as of course the scarcity of premium redemptions... Sorry, but at some point one just says, enough!

IC's business class product is similar to the business class product of US carriers, which run much longer stage lengths... It is far, far superior to the Euro Business class offered in Europe, which is essentially economy with a little more legroom and the middle seat blocked. However, domestic India operations are far closer to European operations than American operations...
And considering that very few people actually pay for Business on IC anyway (according to Keyser who has experience in such matters), perhaps they'd be better off following the lead of European carriers...

But none of the US/EU carriers have seats held up with duct tape, controls that dont work and once, memorably, a seat that rocked. Look, I like AI service a lot and wish they can climb out of their hole, but let's call a spade a spade when we see it...

Ah, you meant it in that sense...
I thought that you were saying that what IC's business class is supposed to be like, in theory was not competitive...
If the hard product is falling apart, it certainly wouldn't qualify as competitive.

there were 20 seats in business which i still think is too much....
guessing you were either on one of the A321's or the older A320's because only these have 20 seats. The A319's and newer A320's have only 8 seats.
The aircraft with 20 J seats are there for a reason: babu traffic or not, these are paid for. The airline gets paid for it indirectly by the Govt. Babus, MP's and some defense people get vouchers which are paid for by the respectve central/state govt agency. 10 years ago, when my long retired father was pulled out of retirement and appointed to a Judicial enquiry team, he got as many as 20 business class vouchers to be used within a year: paid for by the Parliamentary Commitee that was doing some investigation! Similar for other departments I am sure.
So it is a legitimate revenue stream. From what I hear, BOM, MAA, PNQ and CCU out of DEL get healthy J loads and hence get allocated aircraft with larger J cabins. There may be some routes where A321 gets sent for operational reasons and 20 J is not required, but in the end its about flexibility.
As for employee travel in J, Air India has actually gotten a lot more stricter with old IC rules being applied systemwide for staff travel. I hear a lot of complaints from AI staffers about how the new minister is particularly anal about checking on how many people were upgraded and for what reason: airline has to send out daily reports on this! Infact Jet is the old Air India in this regard. Travel on Jet's GOI flights out of BOM or Leh/Srinagar flights out of DEL and see the number of free-loading staff in J class going on holiday.
I even saw children of retired Jet Airways personnel travelling J! On another notable occasion, Jet substituted the regular 737-800 which had 8 seats with another 737 which had 16 seats: again this was GOI flight. This substitution aircraft was parked in a remote stand on the international side which required a 30 minute tour of BOM airport by bus!
Turns out a whole bunch of Jet staffers were going on holiday and needed a larger J cabin to accommodate everyone! :)

You know what? I actually believe that, and I think IC's config on the domestic fleet is more or less fine. Not that it will stop the I-heart-AI gang from blaming the world.
What all of our airlines could do is to adopt the Euro-style glorified Y seating instead of the American style quasi-F seating. Good for the airlines, not so much for us passengers, I know, but stage lengths in India are rather short.
As for Jet, seeing the J cabins full of freeloading friends and family has been a common sight for a while now. They're not the Old Air India for nothing.
And the plane being parked far away is also a regular Jet thing. They love to do it. Why inconvenience employees when passengers can be inconvenienced instead?
I am not joking when I say it can take more time to get from aircraft to terminal when flying Jet than to fly between Bombay and several places.

+1..
Just for that one.. I once remember flying BLR MAA (a 45 minutes flight).. the flight was parked so far off in BLR that I thought, by the time my bus ride takes me to the plane, my brother could have driven me all the way to MAA.. lol.. I know Im exaggerating, but that's how it felt that time.. but it wasn't jet that time, it was Spicejet..

these remote stand things are not entirely airline doing. lack of parking space, dom/intl operations, airports not designed for the same and lack of towing or taxiing permission of aircraft from one terminal to the other by airport authorities are some of the reasons for the same.
say an intl flight arrives into bombay at 4 am and it has to be prepped for a 6 am domestic departure. asking bombay atc for towing permission at that time, they will respond with call after 4 hours. now would you rather inconvenience your passengers a little or would you not utilise your aircraft for 4 hours. you know who wins all the time.
delhi airport fortunately has not been a problem till now atleast, and it is much easier to move aircraft between the intl and domestic parts of t3.

in the example i quoted, it was a diff case. The change of aircraft was because of higher loads in J which required an aircraft swap. THe aircraft that was bought in was the one being used for the SIN-BOM rotation.
Now that larger load in J was not exactly commercial load! :)

I understand all that, to a point.
But Jet seem to have made it a policy. Presumably because its cheaper.
And whilst ATC and the tower and the airport might all have their lopsided way of doing things, Jet have long been the largest tenant at Sahar. Yet they seem unable (unwilling?) to exercise any clout. Especially when it comes to passenger conveniences, I have to go with unwillingness, because that seems to be their attitude all around.
The domestic flights at peak hours are one thing. But even the Hong Kong and Singapore flights almost never have a boarding bridge, Brussels often doesn't and London too on occasion. Whilst all the other airlines, including AI, are happily docked at a gate. Hell, the Bangkok flight that arrives in the afternoon is parked at a hard stand, at a time when Sahar is deserted. The only other plane is the Indigo - also from Bangkok - and that's at a gate.

All the regional air India intl flights also don't get boarding bridges except a couple. The long haul flights of jet you are mentioning I believe are all the night flights. The reason is with only so many aero bridges and all the intl airlines flying in at night, gates are given on a rotational quota basis and some days a Lufthansa for eg, will be at gate and some days at remote stand. The problem with air India and jet is that with the number of intl departures, their quota kind of gets used up at odd time intl departures and at peak time all they get us 1-2 gates.

Has anyone done this already?
I booked 2 tickets for Mumbai - Goa just now which was for 16k miles total and all the miles got debited from my account instead of 12.8k since 3200 miles equate to the 20% discount.
Will be good to get feedback of others who have redeemed recently and hope its not another series of arguments with those monkeys at Jet
Cheers

I redeemed recently and did avail the 20% discount.. I booked BLR - CCU and instead of the usual 12k miles, I paid 9.6k miles for adults, and 6k for child..
Mind it Parag, that the 20% is not available necessarily on all flights at all times.. but the miles they show you while booking is what they will charge you.. I was shown 9.6k miles for the sector, which I knew to be a 20% discount.. if they showed you 16K, then that is after discount, or the discount is not available.. there is not secret refund of 20%.. hope this helps..

Why a fight? BOM-GOI is 5k miles in Y, so 4K is the correct amount they charged.

Yup - My mistake on that one. Checked their mileage calculator and it says it is 5k miles each
