Aegean Airlines Miles&Bonus - Earning difference between Aegean and Swiss

Hi everyone,

I am a bit confused between Aegean and Swiss earning levels. I am going from LHR to MAD via GVA next week with Swiss in Z, so I understand I'll get, as per Aegean's website:

Booking Classes J, C, D, Z, P
Accrual Factor 200%
Minimum miles 1000

Milecalc:
LHR GVA 1000
GVA MAD 1254

Total 2254 x 2 = 4508, correct?

Then I am going from LHR to ATH in July and am deciding between Swiss and Aegean (based on reviews, I'm very inclined to try Aegean's Business).

If I go with Swiss via GVA, based on milecalc I'd get 6308 miles in Z.

Then I see the earning levels on Aegean:

INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS PER ROUTING
4TH CATEGORY OF FARES (BUSINESS) C, D, Z, A
2000

What do they mean by "2000 miles per routing"? Does it mean I'd get only 4000 miles for the LHR-ATH return, or would I get that amount times two? Am I crazy to think that it would be 8000?

As per milecalc the total mileage LHR-ATH-LHR is 3020, or 6040 in C. Is this what I'd actually get on Aegean?

Thank you for your help!

Correct, only if you have a return ticket, otherwise it's 2254.

Aegean's M&B uses a "combination" of actual miles and fixed miles per segment. It is true that business class within Europe "only" yields 2000 points/miles per segment, thus a total of 4000. This is indeed much lower than what you'd get on LX, since from LHR to ATH you have two segments each way, plus the 25% bonus if you have status with M&M (careful, M&M recently lowered their miles/points earnings!).

Aegean is definitely not the airline of choice if your aim is to earn miles (award and status). It is the best choice, though, if a) you live in Greece or b) if you want to achieve *G level fast. And irrespective of miles earned, they have a very good product, I'd say much better than many other European and US airlines.

Hello, KLouis

Thank you for your reply.

I shall book the return journey LHR-ATH with Swiss then. What a shame, as I was quite looking forward to flying Agean in Business.
I find rather odd and curious that they won’t spot how this earning difference might actually be driving business away - the Aegean fare from LHR to Athens in July costs pretty much the same as on Swiss, PLUS the 2040 miles that one won’t get. If I can get 6040 miles on Swiss why should I consider getting only 4000 on Aegean?

Thank you indeed for the clarification. You have helped me to make a decision! I am going with Swiss, and will credit to Aegean.

Hello, KLouis
...If I can get 6040 miles on Swiss why should I consider getting only 4000 on Aegean?...Well, a non-stop flight vs a two-segment one. It would bring you to ATH in less than 4 hours compared to a minimum of 5-6 hours. That often affects your connections out of ATH (speaking from experience!). Also, late evening flights available with A3. Allows you to spend the entire day in London and make it to Greece around midnight. There are, as you see, enough reasons to prefer A3, especially if you don't care about the miles (I simply can't spend the ones I've accumulated over the years in three different programs). And, last but not least, I get my Greek newspaper too, and can solve the crossword puzzle.

.

Can certainly see where your coming from . For alot of us it is about the miles although for me its about the status mostly. Lounges/Extra kilos are the top perks for me .

On a bonus note LX is a very good airline and the duty free in ZRH is worth a short stop ^
