Finally ANA has ditched its old inspiration of Japan PY design thanks to Koito and went for a new design which looks awfully similar to CX's new PY seats ;)

Enhancement on current routes with PY seats (HND-LAX, NRT-IAD, NRT-ORD, NRT-MUC)
- sparkling wines and soup will be served with Y meals

Introduction of new PY seats sequentially on NRT-JFK, LHR, FRA, SFO, LAX, CDG from Sep 1 and will be completed by the end of the calendar year.
- 2-4-2 layout
- 19.3 inches wide
- Leg rests and foot rests provided at your feet* and central arm rests equipped with cocktail trays to hold your drinks. Seats also have large head rests to provide better support for your head, and a large net pocket* allows you to store various items such as drink bottles.
*Installed into the seat from the second row.
- 10.6 inch monitor (12.1 inch for first row), a personal TV monitor touch panel, PC power outlet, USB port, i-Pod connection, and a personal light

*Installed into the seat from the second row.

The release says that PY passengers can use lounges at NRT, HND, IAD, JFK, and LAX, as well as priority check-in and priority returns at baggage claim.

Interesting that they're bringing back PY on all of their 773ERs. The seats look better than the CX ones (provided they don't have just that stupid footrest and have actual leg rests in the non-front-row seats). I wonder if they are going to be reducing C seats or Y seats to make room for PY. Either way, as a DIA with free upgrades to PY, I'm pleased!

(By the way, it's SFO, not SAN.)

I'm guessing Y, as the front Y cabins (esp on the high C 77W) don't really fill the space and look a bit temporary.

Great news anyway.

LOL no idea why I put SAN there :p

The lounge access has always been a PY perk since 2007

The original plan was to put only 2 rows of PY seats in the current Y cabin...(row 25-27)

Isn't soup already served with J-menu option already ? If pax choose J-menu as their meal option, so is there additional soup other than miso soup come with the meal ?

Also, didn't see they mention anything about slippers, and some of the amenities from the amenity basket in C, are those stuff discontinue in the new setting ?

It doesn't look like miso soup from the pictures shown in the PR. No idea about the amenities either. It's odd that they don't mention those. Consider how cheap they are, it will be odd for them to remove those amenities

I see -- for some reason I thought it was just at NRT, but JFK, IAD, and LHR were available since the beginning. Once the 787s have PY installed, the HND lounge will be available as well (or was this available ever since HND-LAX began operating? I've never flown PY on that route so I'm not sure...). It's already crowded enough in the evenings, so I wonder if it will be able to cope with the (albeit small) influx of users?

Do they have plans to install them on 787? It didn't mention any of the 787 routes in the PR.

You are right...actually the PR in 2007 says. So I guess they are expanding the lounge access to other airports now

At Frankfurt, Paris, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago, customers will be given vouchers for refreshments.

Yep, it says so in the Japanese announcement (http://www.ana.co.jp/pr/12_0103/11a-198.html) (but not the English one, strangely):

また今後、ボーイング787の長距離機材にも順次プレミアムエコノミーを導入してまいります。

They will probably announce something for the HND-FRA, NRT-SEA and NRT-SJC routes once the 787 delivery schedule stabilizes.

Not strange at all that they have more info in the Japanese version of the PR. I would assume so. I guess 2-3 rows of PY in 787 in the mini Y cabin where row 21-23 are

Here's my dumb question - as someone who's not an ANA frequent flyer, but is planning some business into the Pacific rim later this year, how do I book a Premium Economy seat?

I'm 6'4" and self employed. I'd love to fly J but it's not always feasible. So I'm on the ANA website, and I can't see an option to book a Premium Economy fare...

Search for your route with economy fares and on the search results page select the premium economy tab, then the radio button for your fare type - Eco-wari Premium Light and Eco-wari Premium are the discounted PY fares. Or for complete changeability an "economy class normal fare" entitles you to PY seats, though these fares are fare more expensive than discounted J.

I could check some Premium Economy Fares after September 1, for such as NRT-JFK, LHR, FRA, but not SFO.
So, the Premium Economy Fares are not fully reflected yet.

The PY fares out of Japan are still ridiculous... For example, here are summertime fares for NRT-LAX.

Cheapest Y fare:
4/1~4/26 44,400
4/27~5/3 84,400
5/4~7/12 44,400
7/13~8/23 71,400
8/24~9/30 44,400

Cheapest PY fare:
4/1~9/30 296,000

Cheapest C fare:
4/1~4/26 277,400
4/27~5/3 329,400
5/4~7/12 277,400
7/13~9/30 329,400

Why the hell would anyone buy PY if it's more expensive than C?

Why the hell would anyone buy PY if it's more expensive than C?

I've noticed the same thing, to my great chagrin. NH's PY pricing is ridiculous. It's like they don't want people to buy the product. They also don't offer mileage awards in PY (last time I checked). JL offers good fares in PY and offers mileage awards. What's wrong with NH?

I also noticed that the new PY seats are remarkably ordinary. What happened to all the bells and whistles that they were planning to offer before? They were going to have hard-shell seat backs, privacy dividers, and 42 inches of pitch. Now they're back to plain jane seats with the same 38 inches of pitch as before.

I can only guess that
(1) They want to keep seats open for platinum upgrades, and
(2) Enough people work for companies with moronic travel policies which will pay for full fare Y but not discounted C even if it's cheaper.

I even have an email to that effect from the time I bought a cheaper C seat.

Maybe I'm just not paying attention, but I am on a full Y fare sitting in HND right now and my itin says PY, but they are telling me tough luck since HND to GMP doesn't have PY. Does NH typically sell seats in cabins that don't exist? Grrrrrrr.

armagebedar
Apr 16, 12, 1:26 am
Is your entire itinerary HND-GMP?

sandiegofun
Apr 16, 12, 4:46 am
No, it's SAN-SFO-KIX; ITM-HND-GMP; ICN-SIN-KUL-SIN-NRT-SFO-SAN.

Everything but ICN-SIN-KUL-SIN is on United 016 stock. Both ITM-HND and HND-GMP were in full Y which listed as PY on the itin. Is it a TA error or is NH just misleading me and selling tickets to cabins that don't exist?

armagebedar
Apr 16, 12, 5:13 pm
It sounds like a TA (or UA) error; there's only Y and F on Japanese domestic flights, so perhaps the system got confused.

sandiegofun
Apr 17, 12, 1:57 am
Yep. I went thru it with my TA and it sounds like I was on a Z thru fare on the open jaw and because there is no Z on either NH leg they refared to full Y. I should have paid more attention since my coworker was on a Z thru fare that booked into either F or A domestically.

Thanks

Doesn't seem all that impressive compared to the older generation seat they are replacing and this is even more apparent when you dig through google looking at the press releases of the fixed shell PY seat they were supposed to have introduced by Koito back in 2010. They've even cut back on bumping the pitch up to 42in as they planned to do 2 years ago.

From ANA's website: http://www.ana.co.jp/eng/aboutana/press/2011/index_120329.html

Premium Economy is currently available on the four routes between Narita and Chicago, Washington DC and Munich, and between Haneda and Los Angeles to passengers who have purchased Economy Class tickets at regular rates. From Friday June 1, the Premium Economy service will be further enhanced to provide sparkling wine and soup in addition to regular Economy Class meals.

From September, the Premium Economy service will also be introduced sequentially on routes between Narita and New York, London, Frankfurt, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Paris, where ANA’s new seat product will also make its debut.

Does this mean if I book now in Y for New York to Narita, I will get Y+? What does regular rate mean? Full Y, or discount Y is okay too? Thanks!

Full Y and the cost close to discount business, so you are better off buying discount business if it is your own money. Premium economy is only for companies wouldn't pay for their employees to travel in business, hence a better option than normal economy.

Welcome to FT and the ANA forum, bluemarlinfish!

I just did a search on ANA Japan website. There's indeed only Economy in the drop down menu. But on the search results page, the premium economy fares are displayed together with the economy ones under "Value fares". And there's a tab for "Premium Economy Seats" for PY only fares.

The US website is different from the Japan one. To search for PY using the US site, click the "Search Options" link on the right under "Promotion Code". Then you can check the PY boxes to update the results

E+ seats are not free to non-UA *Gs. This was the case, until about 2005 or 2006 (Full Y also used to get it at this point), but not since then. If a flight is oversold in E-, they'll likely move *G to E+ before non-status members. You may also find some agents willing to move *G up without charge if E- is not oversold, though I suspect with the new management in, this is less likely than last year.

On Dec 22, 2012 I flew NH6 NRT to LAX on a coach fare and at the *G checkin in NRT I asked if there was space in premium economy expecting to pay for it if possible. I wasn't sure if this was even possible but i thought I would ask. So the agent said that coach was oversold and that she could move me up and it would be complimentary. It was a nice ride back home.
