Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles - Star alliance silver benefits on TK?

Hi all,

Wondered if you could help me with a quick question. I tried calling Turkish reservations, and actually got yelled at for asking what I thought was a simple question. I may actually write a complaint about this... Either way my question was:

I flew LHR- IST-PVG in full cost business, but on my return voyage I have one leg in comfort class as the plane was full (not for a lack of wanting to pay). I recieved the standard two bags of checked luggage on my outbound flight but am only allowed one on the return flight as I have one leg in comfort class. I'm currently a star alliance silver member with United and wanted to know if you extended any star alliance benefits to members in the form of a free checked bag.

The response was why are you calling Turkish, call united and ask them. When probed as to my flight being with Turkish, and that United states that they extend this privilege to Turkish customers and that are only able to answer benifit questions about their flights, the agent became very irate and basically hung up on me... It's a real shame because Turkish b class has turned out to be such a brilliant product that I was considering using them for future flights... I've been flying 15k/month this year since swapping to united and I find this type of attitude unacceptable.

Anyway, anyone able to answer this question? If its no, thats fine - I'll just have to pay the extra expense.

Thanks!

Hmmmm seems that *silver doesn't give extra baggage according to http://pss.united.com/web/en-US/content/mileageplus/premier/staralliance.aspx?Mobile=1

Kind of silly that after paying $4k that they are going to ask me for another $50 for an extra bag.

AFAIK, for PVG the weight concept is applied. So it should be 20kg for Comfort. IME, since your connecting flight to LHR is in J (Business) you should not have too much trouble.

Yeah, that's what I'm worried about as I've got more than 20kg of baggage. I had 40kg on the way down. Suppose it comes down to having to pay excess baggage fees then.

Thanks! :D

did you already look on your ticket, how much kg they state there? In most of my flights with TK in Y or Y+ i got 30 kg. So if you put in some weight in your handluggage and put a bit more then 30 kg in your suitcases it shouldn´t be a problem.

From PVG it's 25kg if Y+, not sure for Y, they are very easy going with extra weight, since the end of your trip is in J you shouldn't worry

Regarding TK's baggage weight limits. Always check the fare rules and print them if necessary. I would bet my money that average TK check-in agent is as confused as OP what comes to Comfort and mixing out different classes. When checking in, look like you know what you are doing and don't ask questions. Probably there is a turkish person on the next counter trying to check in a forklift and waving his arms in despaire.
