The Hotel De La Paix Siem Reap will be rebranded as the Park Hyatt Siem Reap following a complete renovation. The hotel is expected to open in 2013 and will offer 107 guest rooms and suites, two restaurants, one bar, a bakery, spa, fitness center, and two swimming pools. The hotel is situated nearby the renowned 12th century runis of Angkor and close to more than 1000 temples including Angkor Wat, the world’s largest religious monument.

Great news! The perfect excuse for finally getting to Siem Reap. Something I have been thinking of, but somehow been putting off for years. The only other "major chain" option is the Le Meridien IIRC.

Siem Reap is in Cambodia, not Vietnam. But the Hotel De La Paix is quite a luxurious property. I'd always wanted to stay there since I last visited Siem Reap a couple years ago and now it'll give me a Hyatt option, too. Two birds in one stone!

Interesting, as the Hotel de la Paix just took over the former Alila Cha Am, south of Bangkok... presumably an expansion for them, but now their signature Siem Reap property is being rebranded.
Looking forward to seeing what Hyatt does with the property...!

I am very surprised they the Hotel de la Paix will become a Park Hyatt. The hotel itself is quite nice indeed but the location really sucks, in the centre of Siem Reap, surrounded by dusty, dirty, noisy streets.
My first choice in Siem Reap will remain the Grand Hotel a Raffles property, a truly elegant historical building with flawless service. My second choice would be the Aman Resort across the street.
My ten cents thought.

Interesting. I love the Hotel de la Paix because of its location. It is totally serene inside but you can get into the chaos by just stepping outside. Prefer it over the Aman (never stayed at Raffles).
Just a bit shocked to see this hotel to become a Hyatt. The essence of the hotel was always about the community and the local focus so the opposite of an international chain. Then again Hyatt has been quite good in displaying individual, local style under the Park brand.

Sent an email to the property and got a reply saying it will open in mid July and was offered a special opening rate of $365++. I think this price is a bit of a joke considering I am staying like 2 weeks after opening and given the price of competing properties such as the residence d'angkor.

Are you sure that wasn't the rate for your entire stay? :D
On a more serious note--I frequently see newly-opened branded hotels charging exorbitant amounts in resort or exotic locations.
Marriott is especially guilty of this--even with their boring CY brand.
Try booking CY Santa Barbara or Kauai--the rate is around $250+ for very bland accommodations in far-from-optimal locations.
Do they actually get those rates?
Certainly not from me.
The good news is these properties often require significantly less points per night than one would expect given the revenue rates...

Raffles is $220 and sofitel is $120 for my dates so I wouldn't exactly say they are in line. I could understand charging rates like this in a years time, but trying to charge those rates at opening when there are bound to be teething problems is a bit much.

I think Aman resorts are an exception. Even if there was an Aman resort set up in a sewage pit, they could still manage to get customers paying $1000/night ;)

I don't think they will have problems with the rate. There are a lot of customers who will pay this- my problem in Siem Reap has been to get a room at a good hotel regardless of price.

This is a hypothetical question, as Aman would never build in a subpar location. Amanresorts are able to command the rates they do because of their locations and the unparalleled overall experience they offer. In most Aman locations there is also very high demand for other high-end properties at lower price points from brands like Four Seasons, GHM, Park Hyatt, etc..
A nearby example would be Luang Prabang, where in addition to Amantaka there are R&C and Orient Express properties have rates similar to PH Siem Reap.
Hotel de la Paix is a great fit for the Park Hyatt brand.

Agreed, however I think the opening rates they are offering are the rates we can expect constantly so there is nothing "special" about them. Guests are always taking a risk staying in the first weeks after opening.. They are effectively the Guinea-pigs for refining service and F&B offerings so usually there are pretty decent opening rates.

Of course actual daily rate will fluctuate depending on occupancy.
I agree staying at a new property is risky. Opening rates can be low or very high. I often find that there is room for substantial negotiation when properties open with exorbitant rates.

I stayed there a few years ago in its former incarnation and this was before Siem Reap became as popular as it is now and the entry level rooms were $330 and suites were around $600 USD and the hotel was sold out- I couldn't even stay the days I wanted to in a row (had to move from one room type to another)- booking 30 days out.
By the way- if all the luxury hotels are sold out in Siem Reap or you don't want to spend that much money- the Hotel Victoria is a very nice 3.5* alternative with a great breakfast- not luxury but then again the price is usually less than $200 all in.

Be nice to know what the Category would be... I called the reservation line and the agent said he presumed it would be a Category 6... that would place it amongst the likes of Park Hyatt Tokyo and Sydney.

What is a stretch? Of course as a Park Hyatt that will be in high demand it will most likely be a category 6, or at a minimum category 5.

What is a stretch? Of course as a Park Hyatt that will be in high demand it will most likely be a category 6, or at a minimum category 5.
It is a stretch because Cat 6 properties, as I mentioned before, are in locations where cost of living and operating cost in general are high and are located in major metropolitan areas; Tokyo, Hong Kong, Paris, Zurich, Moscow, even Milan.
Whereas Cambodia is not a location where you expect a Cat 6 to be. It is more comparable to Cat 4 like Park Hyatt Saigon, Hyderabad, Chennai; even Seoul is a Cat 4. Looking at Cat 5, you're in the company of Beijing, Shanghai, Istanbul, and Dubai.
So, yes, if PH Siem Reap were to be a Cat 6, given all the relative Park Hyatt properties, I would consider it too high; regardless if it is in demand or not. Demand itself has no bearing on the Category.
And to add, I visited Hotel De La Paix when I was in Siem Reap to look around; it was a wonderful place. But unless Hyatt is going to do something beyond a remodel, i.e. tearing it down and rebuilding it to an epic property beyond comparison in the region, I don't see how it would qualify as Cat 6. I've stayed @ PH Paris and Tokyo, and I can see why those marquee properties have gotten the Cat 6.

Definitely Virtuoso affiliated. Looks like the only benefit over diamond benefits is that you get a complimentary set dinner for two and 20% off selected spa treatments. I have a $255 rate already organised with the hotel.. If it is ineligible for a 6000 point upgrade, then I will book the daily rate through virtuoso instead, otherwise it isn't worth about $80 for the meal.
