I am relocating to New Zealand and will be flying on FJ to make this move. Most of my goods are going by sea, so the limited checked baggage is not an issue. My question is about the carry-on policy. Per the website, FJ has a 1 bag/7kg carry-on limit. I am taking a large supply of prescription medication and a small medical device with me. I will also have my laptop, camera, and other "never check" items.

I did call to ask about this issue. First the agent told me that everything, medical or not, counts toward the 7 kg allowance. Then she told me to ask at the ticket counter for an exception. I am not too keen on waiting until I get to LAX to know whether I'm going to have to check something that I shouldn't check, so that's why I'm asking here. Any experiences with FJ's carry-on policy when it comes to medical items?

Thanks.

To answer my own question now that I've flown, in case someone has the same question in the future...

I had no problems with two carry-on bags, one a backpack with my laptop, camera, and purse inside, and the other a tote with the medical supplies. I specifically asked about the second bag when checking in, and the agent barely gave it a glance and said it would be fine. The agents seemed more concerned with larger pieces and rollaboards - those invariably got weighed and measured, and if they were overweight or over-sized, pax were given a disposable tote and told to re-pack and/or check the offending bag.

There were several pax who carried on 2 and even 3 bags, albeit small bags. The unspoken rule-of-thumb seemed to be if the bags were small enough that all of them fit in the carry-on sizer together, then they were OK. YMMV.
