Travel Photography - Cracked back glass of Canon PowerShot 100

So I accidentally banged the back glass against a rock and the back glass covering the LCD cracked. I read a post where it isn't that hard to remove it and replace it with the Canon part. You need a hair dryer, suction cup and a can of air.

I couldn't find any info on what it might cost to get it done by Canon.

I had a screen protector in a box and I hadn't put it on yet. Aargh.

Anyone have any similar experiences in replacing the back glass?

The fix itself is pretty easy, easier than replacing the screen on an iPhone which is itself quite easy. The problem will be in finding an authorized Canon dealer/repair facility that will sell you the part.

As for repair, most camera stores and repair facilities have minimum charge guides for each class of camera; DSLR, point-n-shoot, etc.

I would guess the minimum repair charge to be in the $100 range.

I had a Panasonic Lumix that was one month old and I droped it while on vacation, cracking the back screen. I bought a new screen from HK on Ebay and found a video on youtube on how to repair. The repair was very delicate but it actually worked. Try Ebay.

Thanks - I just have to remember to call Canon and see if I can get the part.

???

Don't you suppose that Canon will instead direct you to one of their authorized repair facilities to have your camera fixed?

I read online from people who had success calling the Canon parts phone number and ordering back glass as of 2010. I'll call them tomorrow.

Maybe they will. Never owned Canon so never had to deal with their customer service, though they can't possibly be worse than Nikon's customer service policies.

I've had very good luck with Canon phone and repair service.

I called the Canon US parts number and you can order whatever you want, but they didn't list a back class for the LCD screen. Only a back cover for $25.00. I have no idea what it is and putting the part number in Google pulled up nothing relevant. I did read something where someone mentioned in one sentence on Amazon that the LCD already has the glass already attached to the LCD as one unit.

Ugh.
